Somalis are one of the few ethnicities that don’t change their names in the West

I came to this realization recently and I really love that about us.

Names are our identities and provide a link to our roots and I love that we maintain them. No matter where we go we will keep the same names we had back home. I’ve never seen any Somali change their name, no matter how foreign it sounds to westerners. Whereas most immigrants will whitewash their names in some way, even though it doesn’t work because racists will still find a way to discriminate other parts of you (skin colour, accent, religion etc)

Only South Asians are like us. Other Africans, Arabs, East Asians, they all take on European names when they come here.

We have so much self respect as a people, it’s truly something to be proud of.

I know a guy called Yusuf and changed it to joseph legally

Did he actually change it in the west? In Somalia there are guys like Sadiq John, Michael Maryama, Saleebaan Gaal, John Cagey etc

Idk if he actually changed his name legally but that's what he likes to be called when he moved to the US.

Btw Saleeban Mahmoud Adan(Saleeban Gaal) he was called by that by the locals because he married a white English woman and he hates to be called by that name

My dad’s family have been in the UK for like 60+ years. They all have Somali sounding or at least Arabic sounding names. No western names here. Even the new Somali babies being born to us are with Somali names.

edit - that being said I have two non Muslim relatives with Western names.
