But before that I'm African, and before that I'm Somali. I swear to god Somali people have some sort of insane identity crisis. I've seen all of these ideas and terms tossed around ad nauseam. "We are Arab!" "We are Caucasian!" "We are actually dark white!" "Race is a social construct!" "Race is our skin color!"
Seems to me people only identify with what they want to when it's convenient. Same Somali boys that hang out with African-Americans, same boys that say "nigga," will secretly call those same friends "adoon" among other Somalis, but the moment somebody calls them a "" or "abeed?" Bam! They start crying and whining, "it's so hard to be Somali, boo hoo!" Same Somali people that call themselves Arab also really like to ignore that Arab views of us nowadays aren't exactly stellar. You guys don't even speak the language.
Oh, and let's not even pretend that same bigotry doesn't play a role in how everyone is so eager to a call a certain tribe a bunch of "apes," "monkeys." Gee, I wonder where those stereotypes came from! Gotta love that in a country where your qabil don't mean shit that you find the need to put them down! Or how some Somali people will abuse Diana and hair relaxer, will give their daughters nicknames because their skin is too dark, and will say that Somalis with thicker hair have "timo Madow." Gee, I wonder where these standards of beauty came from!

Preach!!!! The amount of people I see claiming Caucasian is ridiculous. To actual whites we are seen as nothing more than Africans (and a few more choice words) Some people really need to wake up. There is nothing wrong with calling yourself Somali, no need to attach fake labels onto yourself.
Then why does the term "Asian' not include South Asians (Indian, Pakistanis) or Middle Eastern Asians (Syrians, Palestinians etc) or even Russians who have most of their country in Asia?
Asian can mean any group or population within the continent of asia. However no one said Asian is a race in the first place, when we're talking about Asians, we're talking about north east asians, who are genetically distinct from other races, East Asians (koreans, chinese, japanese, taiwanese) are part of the Mongoloid race because their genetics and biology are sufficiently similar to be classified as such. East Asians have on average the same physical characteristics which makes them distinct from other Asians. South Asians (Northern India) are Caucasian because their biology, for example their skull structure is part of the caucasian group, same with western asians (arabs) and north Africans, and populations from the horn of africa (us)
Makes sense when you realize it was pioneered by Europeans in the 16th century, a time when they were searching for reasons to pillage others and claim superiority (and they did--using race)
Just because a proposition may or may not have biases or ill intended agendas behind them is absolutely irrelavant to the proposition, something is either true or not, doesn't matter if the devil came up with the truth and in terms of racial classifications there is significant evidence to back up that it has a biological basis.
You can see the flaws in it when you come across populations that don't fit the mold, like Somalis for example, as we have very different genetics from other Sub-Saharan African populations, or Southern Europeans.
Fit what mold? Negros? The reason why we don't fit the mold is precisely that! we're genetically distinct from them, almost completely. We are not just different from sub saharan black africans the same way an irishman is different from a frenchman, we are completely biologically seperate. Just because a group doesn't fit a certain mold doesn't mean we cannot fit another. In the case of Cushitic people, we do not fit the mold of other sub saharan blacks but we do fit the mold(in terms of phenotype skull structure and bone structure) the caucasian race. Again this is true on average.
I will only address your last point as I had said earlier in a comment that those terms are not considered valid anymore by anthropologists. Just because it is commonly used by society doesn't make it scientifically sound. What race are Polynesians then? Or South African Khoisan who have an East Asian appearance?
We aren't Caucasians and the fact that some Somalis are so eager to attach that label onto themselves is, frankly, pathetic. Whites don't see you as one of them and wouldn't hesitate to refer to you as a "negroid"--even if you technically may not be one under the classification--simply by virtue of where Somalia is. Somalis, as well as other East African populations, have unique genetics that are native to the region, and cannot simply be described by an arbitrary "caucasoid" or "negroid" label.
Why everyone is so against just calling ourselves Somalis is beyond me. Stop with the fake labels.
