Yep the 1961 referendum was boycotted in Somaliland and those that voted voted no. If you read the African Union fact finding mission they site this. Somalia has no treaty of union and the constitutional referendum was rejected in Somaliland.

Their was more opposition to the constitution in Hiran region which includes the cities of Beledweyne and Buulo Burte (61% voting no) verses in Somaliland.

I haven't read the document thoroughly. But, my intention was to research about the referendum results in 1961. I found that had the vote been just solely on Somaliland whether to join xamar or not based on these results then it could have became its own recognised country like Djibouti.

The vote was about ratifying a new constitution , it had nothing to do with the reunion of the Somali territories.

Also what do you say about the argument, the "act of union" was "never signed"? They use this argument as a legal case to separate.

The union was decided upon by British Somaliland officials and Italian Somaliland officials , both of whom were democratically elected.

Therefore , the union was an act of democracy and also had considerable support from local populations.

U will be told at all times due to larger state next door, their opinions comes first as their impact on the region far exceeds 1 million Isaaq. Yes it does. There was no act of union so konfuur put a act of union in the constituonal referendum and back dated it to the first of July. It’s literally in the 1961 constitution if you’ve read it. Cambridge law, South African institute of law and the AU fact finding mission all state it has no legal basis.
