Somaliland and Puntland Receive Higher Diaspora Remittances Than the Rest of Somalia

Remittances will be going down over time anyway. I doubt the next generation will send as much money back home as their parents. It'll be interesting to see how the region will cope since it constitutes such a large part of the economy.

As it should, in the next 20 years the country should be fully recovered.

That would be the sensible thing to imagine but with so many living in Xamar we can’t be so sure if it’d be low. Dependence on remittances needs to decrease nevertheless. like someone else in this thread said, The next gen ain’t sending money back so it’s either fix up or they’re f’ed
They are fine without remittance most of the time but it comes in handy when there is drought and when clans need to mobilize to help the ppl affected, even tho the north is dry the south is usually most badly affected during harsh times.

I know we set up shop(bakaaro) and restaurant for some of family members a long time ago in garowe, thru pooling of relatives funds while the rural ones earn their own money selling camel milk($70 a day not bad huh considering its not time intensive).

But 'Garowe' is different story to the other rural areas of Puntland which isn't as 'economically' active due to the government, diaspora, international organizations. More dollars are flowing thru garowe markets then say qardho or burtinle, I suspect those areas in rural places are doing far worse.

None of the ones my parents invested into call us at all anymore except when their is marriage and they need 500 bucks or something.

I am very keen studying the 'irish story' they went from basic economy like ours to a knowledge economy due to their large diaspora, they ensured their diaspora money didn't go into 'welfare' but into 'job creations' however the thing they did was ensure they 'targeted' into 'high value' areas of Ireland(outside of farming obviously) which is something I regret my parents didn't do as I didn't know at the time, it's about where u 'direct diaspora money' not just say it's in 'business'.

I can vouch for hamar 70% were on 'remittance' in 98, the only ones excluded were rahanwayn who worked local work as maid due to lack of diaspora and bakaraha markets.

Ironically rahanwayn males never used to come to Hamar back then as they were farming, they sent the women to get cleaning job so they can combine incomes. I am proud they have 'scaled' into small business owners now showing u hard work pays off. I think the males have left now due to 'shabab controlling the area' but they used to stay in their regions.

@General Asad what Somalis need to stop doing is 'checking other regions' your replicating the same thing which means no growth or change, it won't lead to a diverse economy, different regions should experiment using different models in the world. Try the Singapore Model in Hamar, Try the Irish Model in Puntland.

I am not sure what sort of growth can be achieved from articles on SL N PL? There is brain drain in Somalia, their clue-less wallahi, all they know is 'development plans' but Tony Blair said in all african countries they have development plans but no implementation plan kkkkk. because they dont prioritize and begin hiring the expertise needed. I seen this in PL who changes development plan every 5 years,

Tony blair said this is an 'african problem' they know what they need done but they dont know how its going to 'get done' plus they 'lack' data about anything, its like we work on guesses, which i remember when our family operated on guesses if we had data for our relatives, we could've injected that capital into high return areas for them not a shop or restaurant

Research diaspora bonds. India did it and $35 billion dollars from remittances. Philiphines and other third world countries too. Somalia will benefit a lot from it.

Remittance suggest 'dependence'. I want to 'invest' into them but I don't see anything worthy to invest into, they lack any skills that is genuine nor do they propose any business idea for me to 'bank roll' and loan them the money and there is no banking in this shit hole, they go to school, then an Islamist university and no-one is going to invest into that? The only hope they have is to be told go fishing or farming and this is essentially what I am trying to avoid as they will forever live like peasants.

I want to give them money not to consume and sit there then wait for more money out of my pocket, they need to come and show me how the money I invest will lead to to them being financially independent, no-one has shown any model of this.

The population must be split into three

1. PPL with skills and they go to proper universities and get proper degrees
2. PPL with no skills but take them to start ups
3. PPL with good skills with their hands and technical.

Can the govt develop the policies needed for our population and make them ready for diaspora investment rather then asking to just 'send' money because if we do we will invest it into ourselves and create slums for them. Lacag bilaash ma helaysan aduunka, u need to come with something. Once we do that, we can then approach all foreign investors with money and show them proof with the success of diaspora investment.
