With Ethiopias determination to wipe us all out through thirst and hunger by shutting down our main water source in the Shabelle river and soon to be Jubba river we have to look for alternative means, it's only a matter of time before it gets worse.

I can't stress this enough ETHIOPIANS ARE OUR MAIN FUCKING ENEMIES!!! LOL they're taking any actions to keep us separated and in chaos, theyre plan is so obvious but some fellow somalis actually go out of there way to even support them and brag about how southern somalia is in the toilet.

We have to start thinking about alternatives water sources besides the Shebelle and Juba asap. We can first start by slowing Ethiopia down thru the ICJ to stop or slow the Juba dam they wanna build.

So far the one alternative that makes the most sense is to go the way UAE and Australia went, and that's by going the desalination route, basically you get the salt water heat it up, and separate the salt and minerals from the water, this is a very expensive project but we'll never have anymore drinking water crisis.

Our president should start taking loans from other countries for these type of projects and loans for infrastructure too, inshallah if everything goes smoothly with the oil drilling expedition, those loans would be paid back in no time.

Somalia's drought cycle and huge impact it has on population has more to do with nomadic/pastoral life and the country's geography, than Ethiopia.

Also desalination? Developed countries can barely afford it and you think a country with a budget and tax-base smaller than a tiny Midwestern town can afford that? No loans will underwrite that.

This was supposed to be funded by the UAE. Whats the latest on the project? Dams are massive, capital intensive projects that would require serious backing from foreign country/international institution. Somalia needs to discover something of worth or at least be able to have political stability before people will consider spending that type of money.

About 40k each. It's very cheap compared to the other solutions.

The last time I checked they are almost done construction. Keep checking that thread, I try to post any progress on the project there.

First of all, no somlai politician including the president and those around him have the intelligence to see things how you are seeing. Secondly, even on a humaritarian level, they don't care which is something I find strange. How can people embezzle millions while they walk by poor folks everyday.

Anyways, your idea isn't so bad but we've got no money for that. However, maybe eventually we can go that route. I think for now, we need to start building large dams in ever city so that we can store both rain water and water from the rivers you mentioned. Somalia gets plenty of rain water, and sometimes the flood from it kills people. What is stopping us from building dams to store those water?

Since the government won't do anything about this, I think we should. A dozen people who specialize in water resources could make a massive impact.

With rainwater catchments and reforestation efforts, you could probably triple the size of Shabelle river.

The region is facing extreme desertification and deforestation, which in turn lowers rainfall, and dries the river. Many dead rivers in India(much drier) were revived through similar efforts.

The source of the Shabelle river comes from the Bale mountains inhabited by the Arussi Muslims, source of Jubba river is in highlands inhabited by Guji Oromos. It's of paramount importance that these regions (Hararghe, Bale, Arsi, Guji/Borona) form their own country, we're fortunate they are also Muslim and secessionists.
