Somalia's consumer price inflation decreases from 6.06% in December (yoy) to 5.57% in January. Food price inflation is down to 6.72% from 17.54%

More great news I can share. Unlike most foreign countries with central banks which are responsible mostly for interest rates and have available levers like interest rates, Somalia is completely dependent on government policy (trade, security, agriculture production). Congratulations to HSM for dealing with the insane food inflation we saw under Farmaajo.

More progress against shabaab in food producing Shabellaha, getting rid of isbaaro ‘checkpoints’, invest even more in agriculture like the government is doing and we can see even further reduction in food inflation.

Future improvements on the horizon include the new bank notes. They’ll be secure and phase out counterfeit currency therefore reducing the money supply.

More and more Ethiopians will be moving to Somalia for the better ‘economy’. There failures affect us too. Interconnected horn
They shouldn't be allowed to step foot in Somalia or the Somali region. Let them go to Sudan or Kenya. We used to have the strictest laws about foreigners coming into our country pre-91', even before that actually since the medieval ages, we need create laws that will stop these invaders.

Also random note:
Many Somalis in the Somali Region are contributing to our economy and have started to use Somali banks and Somali sim cards. Hopefully once a new stabilized Somali currency is made they will use that as well.

Unfortunately there’s more opportunities in Somalia for them. There’s going to be a significant economic boom once Shabaab is defeated and Somalis reject many different types of jobs Ethiopians will gladly do. I expect significant migration unless we close our border. Which won’t happen given it’s not defined.

Hopefully something is created in order to combat this imminent and dangerous migration. The policies should unanimously agreed upon because I believe Somalis, no matter where they are think similarly, it's the same reason 30,000 Oromos were forcefully deported from Djibouti a few years ago

:dead:

We need to stop relaying on foreigners to do tasks we can do ourselves. The geeljire lifestyle is changing, especially in places like PL where people go to trade and vocational schools. I think if infrastructure projects like road building were partly state funded to a degree and offered many of unemployed Somalis a guaranteed amount of money that was decent they would do it. Many of the old governments factories were partly state owned + partly owned by an entrepreneur and people would line up in droves to work those jobs. A similar model can be followed here. Many roads, hospitals, schools, ports, airports, farms etc need to be built/rebuilt and if we can relay on ourselves to do it instead of hiring foreigners the money will go straight back into the economy.

We need to at least regulate what we need for the economy and production if we get to that level,

Please lets not. Our people's suffering are already more than sufficient. Remember DDS is tied to that country with no end in sight. Everything terrible happening there will have a negative effect on Somalis. The covid was terrible, but the war and its immediate effects exacerbated the livelihood of the locals. Lack of foreign currency, devaluation of currency, etc. Prices of everything has skyrocketed, and more people are falling into poverty. :jcoleno:

Nothing to do with Culusow you dumb propagandist, inflation is down because Crude oil fell nearly 30% from 125 a barrel to 75 in a span of a year due to COVID restrictions being lifted. Somalia heavily relies on imports to feed itself and isnt self sufficient. Of course when oil goes down the prices will reflect that.

In addition to dysfunctional migration laws, Somalia has very loose citizenship/nationality laws. It states that "For the purpose of this law, any person who by origin, language or tradition belongs to the Somali Nation shall be considered a Somali".

A lot of people will meet these demands, especially in DDS where you'll find many non-Somalis speak the language, some of them Somalized too but still claims their ethnicity. It basically opens up a pandora box. Which we haven't seen yet, due to the instability of Somalia, but soon will this be apparent. :patrice:

Some in the EAC were against our nationality law. Especially Kenya. That seems to being overlooked now but the fact any Somali Kenyan is a Somali citizen if they want to be used to be a sticking point

Interesting observation, but is it not weird how the focus on the possibility of migration of Somalis outside of Somalia, into EAC is a concern? When it be a drop in the ocean compared to hundreds of millions of people that will make up the EAC and later on Federation.:ayaanswag:

Wheat prices are oscillating around €280 to €285 per ton, far from the record high of €438 per ton reached in mid-May 2022, notes 'Le Monde' economic columnist Laurence Girard.

Extreme water and food shortages even before Russia’s war in Ukraine, which is known as “Europe’s breadbasket,” have only made an already fragile situation worse. Somalia imports about 90% of its wheat from Ukraine and Russia, and the war there has all but halted those shipments over the past two months, according to a report from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Both you and Tek have made similar points however Somalia isn’t the only country in the world to import wheat. Both Ethiopia and Egypt (both above 30% inflation) import their wheat from Russia and Ukraine and yet are seeing increasing inflation while Somalia sees rapidly decreasing inflation.

This is a success story of our government’s making due to the increased supply routes and security. Reduced Shabaab taxes, getting rid of trade barriers with our neighbours like Kenya and UAE which we have significant trade with, isbaaro and cheaper transport of goods will all contribute the cost of goods.

No need to always be but hurt about the progress we’re making. You can join the train, preferably on the back of the queue

Check my edit, also Ethiopia imports 25 % of their wheat whilst Somalia imports nearly 100 % of its wheat. And when the Ukraine war happened, they increased wheat production by 70 %. Ethiopia is a food self sufficient country whilst Somalia imports over 75 % of its food.

We will always be dependent on the international market for our food supply, because since 1970 we lost the ability to be food self sufficient due to rapid population growth. Our water resources and arable land statistically cannot support more than 4 million people.
