Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre announced on Tuesday that the federal government has allocated a budget for three thousand new teachers in 2024.

Prime Minister Barre congratulated Somali teachers, students, and families on the commemoration of Somali Teachers Day on November 21.

He emphasized that the government is attaching particular importance to the development of teachers and the education of Somali children, considering it a crucial part of the ongoing efforts to rebuild the country.

Several months ago, the federal government hired a record 3,000 new teachers to address a significant education gap. This initiative followed a four-fold increase in the budget of the Somali Ministry of Education for 2023.

Can we stop comparing different Somali presidents, which will only result in a crabs in a bucket mentality, and start holding them up to the standards of leaders from other countries that pushed their nations to economic prosperity?

We are still a LONG way from producing exemplary leaders that could one day inspire other nations unfortunately, but raising our standards and expectations is the first step.

There is an entire generation of people that learned how to read and write in the 1970s and subsequently joined a campaign to teach the rest of the country. I wonder if they could be hired as teachers with some training, see China’s initiative of hiring one hundred thousand ‘Silver Teachers’;

This is great but such a campaign will meed to be funded which will be very hard.

Somalia needs to hyper focus on logistics and infrastructure.

Then blue economy, industrial production and agriculture.

Then we can focus on the mass education and healthcare/quality of life.

We need to go step by step.
