Somalia was always a poor country

All new countries start out as poor. It was a new country at the time. But they’re supposed to improve over time 🤣

It’s still mind boggling to me that we had so much oil and resources that were discovered early on but were never extracted. Like they found oil in Somali land in 1952 and it was east to extract similar to Saudi, so why didn’t we export it instead of relying on military aid and taking foreign debts. Our economy was based on livestock at the time but they should’ve used the oil and other resources to kick start the economy investing in public infrastructure, education and made military service compulsory. It would’ve killed qabilism and any secessionist movement. Plus we could have given drilling contracts to companies like shell(British) and Exxon (French) in return for djiboutis and NFD unification. There was no incentive to give these lands to Somalia because there was nothing they’d benefit from doing so. It was a bad foreign policy which got us into this position I can’t even blame the British or French we could’ve got international recognition if we had better diplomatic ties based on trade.
