OPINION Somalia should have a One Term limit

Presidents are too obsessed about maintaining power and seeking re-election, not enough focus is put on governance and security.

Wouldn’t it be great if presidents had a one term limit?

Another interesting idea is allowing 2 terms but they have to be non consecutive. I haven’t seen this idea anywhere but I kind of like it. People say the benefits of 2 terms is momentum, but experience has shown time and time again that the the negative aspects of 2 terms (or god forbid unlimited) in African countries far exceeds any benefits that could have been accrued from experience of being in office.

Let a president have one single term, if voters approve his/her performance , they can run again in 4 years, without using the power of the state to tilt elections in their favour.

Each term should be 5 or 6 years and to prevent any president from extending his current term like Farmajo is doing for example, another official like the parliamentary speaker replaces the president automatically on the latter's last day even if a presidential election hasn't taken place yet

This is a good solution to overcome the disadvantages of one term limit.

I actually think major political parties retain most national lawmakers (MPs, Congress members) from one legislative term to the next one.

It still won't stop trying the current president from seeking reelection. Not for him but for his party. He would make his PM the next president. And he would come back as PM, only to return as president the next term.

Allowing president/pm to swap is the oldest trick in the crook book & should obviously be banned as well. Both PM & president are out. Another party member (that is not in the current cabinet) should be fine imo

interesting enough the president of Benin tried to do this (1-term limit) 4-5 years ago but was narrowly rejected by parliament

United States can survive 2 terms of trump, they got strong institutions & a strong economy.
African countries simply can’t afford 2 terms of a complete dud.

I would actually say, multiple peaceful transfers of power would actually be good for business. Most large companies are worried about what the next admin will do, or whether there will be a political fall out etc if gov shows there can be peaceful transfers whilst respecting past agreements, that would be good for business.

Somalia needs continuity of government so I propose 3 term limit combined with 1m1v and party system.

In the US with a fully functioning democracy and party system, the President usually serves on average 2 terms. Same the the UK and its prime minister, most countries infact have continuity of government with 2 or more terms.

Nothing wrong with 1 term government, but 1 term limit is insanity, I rather have president who looks for re-election than a president who knows he has a 1 term limit and is just looking to make quick cash.
