Famine also used to happen under Siad but during "abaarti dabadheer" in the 70s Siad governement relocated affected nomads in the south. This would be impossible now.
Telecommunications improved , this is true but it happened all over the world. Duiring siad barre times most of the world didn't even have internet so of course telecommunications got better .
Basic services like water, electricity etc are probably worse now.

And also let's remember why most of yall are living in the west. Somalis didn't need to emigrate during siad Barre's era , right now thousands of youngsters from SL,PL and the rest of Somalia are risking their lives to leave the country. Back in the days of Siyaad our student's had free or affordable education, our universities were recognized. Now we have fake corrupt University that have zero international credibility and our students need to study in Sudan, Malaysia etc to get a reliable degree.
Before 1991 many faculties in the somali national university were taught by top quality italian professors who were payed by our government, right now anyone in Somalia can teach in uni or claim to be a doctor/engineer with zero qualifications

we were pretty much a failed state after the 77 war. Economy was in the gutter it was only a matter of time till total collapse. The question was not if but when. When you have a struggling economy and take a decisive defeat to a neighbor country who now has military dominance over you , you pretty much sealed your own fate as a failed state.

Good thread. Indeed the economy is better now than it was under #FailureSiad. But the living conditions are still horrible due to: clan warfare, terrorism, and lack of jobs. All this stems from Siad Barre failure. The cancer of qabiilism/qabyaalad was first weaponized by Siad and that horrible decision affected all Somalis mentally with a sick way of thinking. The terrorism and lack of jobs is due to Siad destroying the country and making it a free for all between different groups for control.
