In today’s dollar value that would be $3000 or more, which is not bad for a developing country, which is where the likes of Malaysia were at, at the time. More importantly if Somalia had just focused on development and not militarism, we would be on the same level as Tunisia or Malaysia are today.
Somalia’s economy consists majority of a informal economy, which is why a rebase of the economy would paint an entirely different picture. The mobile money industry is a good indicator of the size of the real economy. A country with a GPD per capita of $500 could never have the same monthly mobile transactions ($2.7 billion in 2018) as Kenya or Ghana nor be the main trading partner of all of its neighbours.

N&N raised the national budget back to the Kacaan days which is a huge win for them, since they didn't get as much aid as Kacaan got.

One interesting thing about the table I posted is that the highest GDP per capita year was 1977 at $1421, which would be equivalent to more than $7,000 dollars today. I wonder whether its because all of the factories, farmers, pastoralists, merchants had to chip in with the war effort?

That is something I will never understand with these chaebols like Hormuud, Dahabshiil or questionable leaders like HSM is their lack of interest for manufacturing and its huge potential for wealth creation. A single medium sized pasta factory for example would wield hundreds of millions of dollars currently spent on importing that item every year to Somalia.

Drought is not tough if the country has desalination plants. LA had one which was built by diaspora. Mogadishu has no excuse. These plants would create a continuous amount of water for drinking and irrigation.
