Don't think there's going to be a unified Somali State due to 2 reasons - clan allegiances & external support / interest

Djibouti:
  • American French Chinese
Somaliland
  • UK FCO - (UAE in future, we'll see)
Somalia - Turkey & Qatar
+ PL - South African PMC

Somalia is pretty obvious with their allegiance

We know about Somaliland as the company that assist them are very vocal on Twitter (Axiom International)

But we don't know about the South Africans in Bosaaso we know from history that mercenaries from there have a bad reputation.

PL has 2 foreign partners foreign wise.

1. PMPF which is our coastguard who have armed helicopters and planes and wide variety of attack vehicles. Their funded by the UAE
2. PSF which is formerly known as PIS is out intelligence service. This is armed/trained by American CIA. This is our 'navy seal' arm they are considered the best fighting group in the nation. Infact Alpha group modelled itself after them.
3. South Africa has no role in PL unless their hired as 'trainees' their not funding shit. Their broke as hell and looking for 'projects' themselves.
4. PL army which is funded by PL this includes our police, border security(darawish)
5. Informal market the citizens who are all armed with different 'grades' of weaponry from light to heavy.

There is to much weapons in PL. It was never demilitarized like the south with UNSOM. That's why reer galgaduud take advantage of the south knowing they have no weapons to defend themselves. PL is probably got the most weapons out of all Somalia. The sheer number of bases gives u an idea of it's military strength.

Thanks for the information,

Question do you think with each state having a different foreign backer stops Somalis coming together politically because economically we're United

I am shocked why we have so much weapons wallahi. It bothers me one of my uncles roams around the miyi with an ak.47 plus 'machine grade assault weapon intended for vehicles'. This is not to mention the pistols they all have in the cities. Plus clans still have their 'technicals' and tanks and bm21 in their clan 'tuulos'.

PL military is begging clans to donate to it, it's not like SL we were not disarmed at all. We only have a ceasefire deal since 98 and gentlemen agreements to keep weapons outside of the city.

I don't think there will ever be an independent Somaliland for the reasons detailed below:

  • No religious, ethnic, and racial differences.
  • Highly corrupt undemocratic elections governed by tribal politics.
  • Neighboured by stable unionist state that undermines its argument that it should be granted sovereignty because they can't enjoy stability when they are a part of Somalia.
  • Independence granted to a state within a country will spawn claims for independence in neighbouring countries ultimately leading to instability and or civil war.
This is why I don't see value in having a discussion about future military support for Somaliand.

There is no 'security' requirement for SL to have a military even, they should be at the level of police and ak.47 only. Why? well it's neighbored by PL who doesn't instigate wars into their 'isaaq' areas and samaroon who are peaceful also like @Kezira that do not want to venture beyond their area either. I don't see any security requirement for SL to justify weaponry unlike PL who is neighbored by the biggest moryaan in Somali history plus has an 'active' stake in the SFG and it's success which makes us an ultimate enemy of SHABAB also.

You raise a good point doc. Their relative success in security comes from geography. The have Djbouti and Eithiopia on one side, and PL on the Somalia side acting as a buffer from the craziness.

UAE has never supported Somaliland militarily but it has Puntland since 2010 in violation of the arms embargo. Somaliland's security funding is salary for its "rapid response unit" and classes. They do not receive any military equipment.

This is what it should look like

Qatar + Turkey
- Somali Armed Forces
UAE
- Puntland Maritime Police Force
British Contractors (non-military security) + Ethiopia
- Somaliland's Police and justice system, military equipment

I'm talking about armored equipment that is in violation of the arms embargo. Radar systems are used for policing/civilian purposes. A country like the UK won't openly violate embargoes unlike UAE.

they get equipment from Ethiopia from what I know, but the UK funds them in return they sold their fish to them

It depends what type of arms. They said 'light weaponry' is allowed for Somalia. UAE hasn't violated nothing, heck even the Americans fund the Puntland Intelligence Sector like they do with ALPHA group in Mogadishu. Are they violating anything? Besides the UN is best practises guideline it's no 'hague' adeer with enforceable power.
