Somali social classes to come.

Fobs and diaspora Somalis born in the West have upbringings so polarised that I think generational divisions have already been sown. As in close to zero intermixing socially or sexually, even if they both have similar wages. The cultural difference is too huge for marriages to realistically work out between those born and raised in cities like Birmingham compared to Gaalkacyo. Their experiences so drastically different friendships between the two will be rare at best.

This won't change probably until Somalia becomes a first world developed country, a long time away. So expect there to be diaspora only neighbourhoods, towns and cities. Expect these social rifts to lead to conflict (riots, looting and targeted violence mostly from the fobs). There's already a deep hatred amongst them against us.

We all know you can visually see phenotypical differences between the two. When the last time you thought a kid born in Columbus was a fob born in Baido.

Let's not ignore the inevitable economic situations both would be in, the diaspora being far more wealthy, and you have the right ingredients to a communist revolt by idiotic masses against an "elite".

There's so many examples in history of what could happen in Somalia. Hopefully we don't have a communist revolution, we all know how the 20th century turned out.

I hope that we can raise the standards of living in Somalia to that of a western country and ensure economic mobility is possible for all so these divisions blur out of existence.

But fobs are more likely to find and lynch us like its a copycat of the Rwandan genocide.

You make good points, but you forget that the cadaans are waking up and there already pushing back by voting conservative.

Your overdoing it, Somalis are not organized enough to do some shit like that. On top of that Somalis are such a small population this would only happen with Chinese or Indian who have a billion people. What about those who were born in Somalia but grew up in the west, are they are basically westernized? Or those born in the west bur grew up in Somalia for some reason. There are too many variables involved.

@Somalinimo not true at all this is all highly conjecture these socioeconomic conditions exist everywhere within the developing and third world countries particularly in other african cointries between those born/raised in the west and the "fobs" which isn't really a sub group,

as all that term really means is a newly arrived immigrant however the differences between the 2 groups aren't necessarily significant to the extent that they're permanent.

As those newly arrived immigrants progress within their development due to social mobility afforded to them by living in the west and even if they don't thrive their children will,

also the rwandan genocide was more racial in its cause as well as belgians colonial policies of polarising tutsi's & H.U.T.U's to heighten tensions with the 2 ethnic groups by favouring the other at any given time,

through the allocation of resources based on the ethnic differences such as physical features between the 2 groups don't confuse the rwandan genocide with the other point you were making.

Idk about new FOBs. I know FOBs that were raised in Arab countries who came here and did well for themselves, enrolled in school, have a career and a small family, etc.

The ones I’ve seen who came here from the bush knowing squat may be vulnerable with worse outcomes.

But there’s definitely different classes between diasporans who’ve been here all their life. The ones who were born in the ghetto are totally different from those who weren’t.

I don’t think there’ll be friction between FOBs and born Diasporans. It’ll have more to do with economics in the US.

I think our generation is the one that sets the tone for how kids in the coming generations will have it. If you’re stuck in the hood, chances are whole generations behind you will remain there.

If you accumulate wealth, or even just live in a decent part of town with a decent job, there’s a chance. It may be that later on the Somalis with better economics don’t mix with the ones who weren’t so lucky.

I will NEVER forget reading an oped testimony written by a UK fob going back to Hargeisa and married arranged there. That true reality experience was so satisfying, I can't describe it. I read it in Somali net forums.

I wonder what happened to him? And his marriage. loooooooooooool

My REAL QUESTION is how can someone born, raised, and still living in Somalia be a FOB?
Turning of your brain will get you far in this forum but yes one has to get on the boat first for this name to work:ohhh:
But currently we don't have a name for these creatures so:kanyeshrug:

I wish there were social classes in Somalia.

Only that way would people try to move up in status.

At this moment there's no reason to try improve your living standards when everyone you know lives the same way.

However in the west they always had aristocracy, rich merchants and later celebrities to look up to.

All their great people did what they did in order to move up in the social ranks.

That's how their countries were built.

Our current social ranks are these at the moment:

IDP>Pastorialist>Urban citizen>diaspora

Sad but true.

Not true. In many cases, pastoralist are actually richer than urban citizens. If 1 owns a hundred camels he is quite rich by Somali standards. But everything can change in a season in the countryside. That 100-200 camels can become 0 so there is no security for them.

How many nomads own 100 camels?

I'm talking about the average here.
