SSDF is the first rebel movement yet it was the only democratic one as the other copy cats were national like the SNA. It was founded in 1978. It lasted till 1986 due to Ethiopia arresting Abdillahi Yusuf who refused the annexing of galdogob and balanbale.

What's also not known is the SSDF wanted to unify all rebel groups and have a post siyad barre political settlement which Ethiopia refused to host. It was due these bold actions by Ethiopia and Abdillahi Yusuf arrest the SSDF surrendered to siyad barre in return for concessions such as building bosaso to garowe road, the bosaso port.

The SSDF was a union of the Somali Workers Party, which was a multi-clan Hoxaist party led by Said Jama and other Somali communists (they had fled to Yemen in 1970 after the Junta took over the Somali revolution) and the Somali Salvation Front, which was a conservative-Democratic Party which was majority MJ

SSDF had a political agenda Somali ppl salvation from dictatorship to democracy, it's even in their name. But due to ethio not wanting rebel groups to have a political settlement post siyad plus ethiopia annexing galdogob, balanbale while also arresting Abdillahi Yusuf pushed the remainder to cut a deal with siyad barre.

They were choosing between two bad outcomes on one side menguistu who wanted a vacuum post siyad barre and no political settlement between the rebel groups vs siyad barre who refused to stand down for a popular election in the spirit of the 1960 to 1969 democratic model.

SSDF aim was to replace siyad barre and install a civilian govt that was similar to the syl. Isaaqs even said to Abdillahi Yusuf we are fighting the 1960 system Iyo wixi naga qaldamay. Imagine our face and shock their fighting a dictator while saying we fighting the democratic SYL system. Then comes hawiye and they flipped the whole political agenda of the SSDF to a clan warfare and warlordism. Anaga siyad UU socono bay sheekadi dhan UU roogeen qabiil war.

Every clan faction—Hawiye, Isaaq, Ogaden, and MJ—received support from Ethiopia. The main goal was to get rid of the Siad Barre regime, even if it meant teaming up with our enemies.

Don't listen to @CABDULWALI XASAN. Abdillahi Yusuf was the only leader arrested by Ethiopia. Why would they arrest their puppet 😭 the problem is hawiye and Isaaq who served ethio interest and why they were never arrested. Majerteen are gob. No AMISOM in our land and ethio don't own our sea.

SSDF are the goats. One of the many reasons that nigerian toilet dwelling nigga siad barre is out. We got a decent port outta those shenanigans.

They all team up with Ethiopia against each other because any divided regional authorities who are in dispute are always backed up by Ethiopia (because they want somalia to be a shithole). Its a sad reality ngl

Let's avoid borderline idolatry concerning certain historical figures; it only leads to unreliable narrators who embellish the achievements of those from their own tribe.

The SSDF was the first rebel group, and it's important to recognize that tribalism didn't begin with the civil war or Barre's rule—it was exacerbated by them. Its roots can be traced back to the grievances of MJs in the government after the assassination of Sharmaake and the concentration of power in Barre and his circle.

It was the initial force to openly challenge the government, attempting a coup, capturing several towns in the early 1980s, which led to reprisal killings by Barre. As the SNM gained momentum, Barre attempted to consolidate Daroods under his control, under "Daroodnimo." It mostly worked as he quelled and gained support for a while for his war in the north from the SSDF and its power base..

As the situation deteriorated, the SSDF regained strength when Barre's power waned. While some exiled leftist members joined the SSDF initially, they soon left due to their lack of tribal support. The original SSF members held most of the power within the SSDF. They solidified control over their tribal territories, forming PL.

None of these groups directly served Ethiopian interests; their common goal was to overthrow Barre. Ethiopian support for the SSDF flipflopped, as Ethiopia itself faced internal unrest during that period.

One uncommon fact is that it is also known as Kulmiye. Its colloquially known as Kulmiye, but officially known as SSDF.

Abdullahi Yusuf had the military wing, while there was an established political wing. Source: My uncle was head of finance for SSDF in the 80's when Libya was the party's main source of funding, Gaddafi funded us and cut off all relations to Somali Republic. My first cousins were actually born in Tripoli, but later fled to the West in 1984 along with Hooyo, pretty cool story.
