Somali presidential candidates demand resignation of spy chief over ‘elections meddling

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Over ten presidential candidates in Somalia have demanded the resignation of the country’s intelligence head Fahad Yasin accusing him of leading the re-election campaign of outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo.

The 14 candidates among them former presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed reiterated their earlier accusations against the spy chief of coordinating the re-election of Farmaajo.

The former Al-Jazeera Network journalist who also served as chief of staff at Villa Somalia has variously been credited for Farmaajo’s ascendency to office in 2016.

“Mr. Fahad Yassin Haji Dahir, should resign as the head of NISA, as he is the head of the re-election campaign of outgoing presidential candidate Mr. Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, to ensure the impartiality of NISA,” the leaders said in a communique released Thursday.

The leaders who engaged with civil society groups, media and clerics and lawmakers have been meeting in the capital Mogadishu for five days. Through Yasin, the leaders said, the Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET) has been packed with intelligence officials from the spy agency NISA.

It’s this contention on FIET also that the leaders demanded its disbandment and those of all Federal Member States (FMS). The FMS leaders particularly Puntland and Jubbaland have been singled out as violators of impartiality in the election of the poll teams.

The demands by the 14 candidates who have threatened a parallel process should Farmaajo not accede is likely to further escalate an already fragile political situation the Horn of Africa nation.

The election teams were at this point supposed to be concluding the process for the start of the election of MPs by delegates chosen by respective sub-clans.

The leaders also demanded that Farmaajo withdraws the national army in the Gedo region to tone down tensions with Jubbaland ahead of the polls.

Other demands include the election of Somaliland lawmakers in Afgooye and not Mogadishu and that of the Benadiri community at the police academy in Mogadishu.

What is the best way to acquire information as a spy? Become a journalist. Like the German-Russian spy Richard Sorge who was stationed in Japan during ww2 as a journalist.

I don't know where Fahad received his training or where his allegiance lies but he is good at his job.

Fahad Yasin is the king in the shadows, due to 4.5, he cannot rule alone so he uses Farmajo as his frontman, who himself was initially brought in to spite Daarood.

Somali politics is just a hot mess of constantly shifting alliances.

I saw Senator Muuse Suude talking about how they spoke to Fahad's clansmen to "stop him".

If Fahad and Farmajo try to steal an election, I feel sorry for their clansmen, because these 2 will be on the first flight out of there.

This is the only theory I believe in. The devil himself doesn't have the same work ethics as Fahad Yasin.
