JOHANNESBURG

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has called on Somalis to unite and avoid tribalism, which previous fueled the civil war in the horn of Africa country.

Addressing hundreds of Somalis living in South Africa on Sunday night, Mohamed said Somalis were fortunate because of their homogeneous nature, and should use this to unite.

“We speak one language, have one religion (Islam) and have a similar facial look. But we are divided along tribes,” He said in a speech delivered in Somali language.

The president urged fellow countrymen to follow other nations that are not homogeneous but have found reason to unite and live peacefully.

Mohamed also urged Somalis in the Diaspora to invest and rebuild their country which has faced two decades of conflict.

He said his government, with the help of citizens, has started rebuilding destroyed historical and national sites such as the national theatre.

Mohamed, a dual U.S.-Somali citizen, previously served as Prime Minister before he was elected by parliament as president in 2017.

Amir Sheikh, chairman of the Somali Community Board which organized the event, thanked the president for honoring their invitation.

Somali nationals in South Africa were also given a platform to explain some of the challenges they face in their host country to the president so he could address these issues whenever he engages with his South African counterparts.

but it’ll always be a problem until the country industrializes imo.

even in the U.S. would you believe there are hicks in the deep backwoods of the south that engage in clan feuds lol imagine that being 70 percent of the country

I just don’t see the big political tribalism being as bad for the country as the little ones that go on everyday that keeps us primitive and at ground zero

Like Silver said; if there are no opportunities around people will continue to bicker over crumbs.

Main issue causing qabil conflict at the moment is the distribution of land.

That's the main prize they're all fighting over.

Government jobs is 2nd but that's a minor issue when compared against land.

Even if the top politicians can't agree on a final constitution why don't they focus on parts of it that everyone can quickly agree to.

1. A fair federal system to certify and auction of land leases.

2. Contract law that creates a court for civil and commercial disagreements ... opening up millions of jobs by ensuring the sanctity of contracts and property ownership.

3. Basic consumption tax that creates a legit revenue stream for state and local governments so that local politics doesn't only attract crooks after a quick payday.

Once you get those basic parts of the constitution ratified then I don't care if the politicians fight over oil revenue sharing or borders for the next century.

Also, we'd be able to safely start businesses, create jobs and in turn pay tax that creates social services that make qabil issues moot.

Farmaajo came to power through a qabil election system, he also uses qabil to attack federal states yet he’s telling us to stop being tribalist?

An eloquent and hard-hitting speech from start to finish. Glad to have an educated team leading the nation again after 27 years of anarchy and corruption. Onwards and upwards.

A mere finger can’t obscure the sun.
Tired of fluffy speeches. We need some action. Qabiil isn’t going away but lets find ways to work around it.
