This is going to sound incredibly weird but I think growing up in the United States, as a kid I always subconsciously viewed Somali as a language spoken by old people and adults and English spoken by the young. Everybody born in the US always spoke English and the older somalis born in Somalia always spoke Somali to me so I made that association at a young age.
