Somali inferiority complex

Well I often wondered why they do what you mentioned in your post and used to think it was because of inferiority complex. It is not. It is just few ignorant ones who think solidarity with some other group will give their empty lives some meaning. Some come to their senses later in life come back to being proud Somalis once they flirted with other cultures.

Why do we think we're superior to the Bantus? I will never understand that.
But yes I agree Somalis back home are a very proud people, this is more for the current gen of diaspora.
I wouldn't say we think we're "superior" to them, folks back home just see them as an economic & ethnic threat so people want self-preservation. Bantu countries like Nigeria are doing a lot better than Somalia right now, so it's good if we compete with them & also co-operate with them in certain fields.

This stuff is often isolated to vocal minorities, and even then I mostly see that on the Internet, not in real life. The identity crisis that not all but some Somalis go through is wide ranging and very broad, whether it be inferiority complexes or superiority complexes (though I see the latter much more than the former.) I can assure you that a vast majority of Somali people know that they are Somali, as bad as it may seem online most of them aren't carelessly tossing their identity in the trash. However someone in this thread did raise the legitimate point that the concept of Somalinimo can be difficult to grasp due to the demonization of Somali people in the public view. Terrorism, piracy, exaggerated stories of Somalis supposedly raping women and ruining the countries they immigrate into. Relatively speaking that issue isn't too strong either but it certainly doesn't help. In the end, there are certainly some problems that should be discussed but they're really not as massive and wide reaching as some people might make them out to be

I honestly have never seen this in the real world and I am and have always been around many Somalis. Somalis in my experience love being Somali and gravitate only towards others Somalis in friendship and relationships. I think this may be exaggerated on the internet because many hermits and isolated insecure people find confidence behind anonymity and unleash themselves. I tell myself some of these people may not even be Somali to make myself feel better (on this site).

Since this thread seems to have headed in one way, I'm going to go against the grain and say I have encountered the opposite irl. I know someone who is ironically very close to me, but has a serious dislike for Somalis. It's weird to explain, we've gone in circles arguing a million times. He acknowledges he's Somali, has never claimed otherwise, but also says it has absolutely no meaning to him. Other than a superficial identifier, sort of like a physical description. Aside from me, and a handful of other guys our age (he has known us for quite a while tbh) he doesn't f*ck with Somalis at all. I'm talking odayaal, habro, girls, everything that isn't specifically a Somali guy our age and from certain crowds. He's only somewhat interested in the situation in Somalia because of geopolitics. I remember his hooyo desperately trying to marry him off to some girl in London, but he did not budge an inch. Ended up moving to a really nice city with a moderate Somali population, but he doesn't interact with the community outside of Jummah at his local mosque. I've been there and all the people he hangs with are the local foreigners, Caribbeans, Moroccans, Eastern Europeans, Iraqis etc. He's going to marry some central/south-American girl, I'm not sure what, but catholic. I remember first time he starting acting funny a few years back, we all thought he was in an edgy phase, but the guy was not joking lol. In his defense though, he's very skeptical in general and I have yet to see him booty clap for foreigners.

He's an extreme, but I've noticed quite a few 'disillusioned' Somalis that are very pessimistic towards anything Somali. I genuinely believe there's just way too much negativity and something needs to be done about it. 95% of the news that's being circulated is negative and there is a lot of hypocritical and dishonest behavior going around.

This is an extreme example but yes Wallahi I have witnessed something similar. There were two Somali guys in my school who rejected everything Somali, they had no interest in other Somalis and seemed lowkey embarrased to be Somali. They both wanted Ajnabi girls too and were proud that they were whitewashed.

That is true. One of my history teachers in School would always make fun of other countries. I remember everytime he would say something negative about the Middle Eastern countries/Pakistan etc all Arabs/Asians would get offended, but when he said something about Somalia the Somalis just laughed..... :francis:
Years of being told we're a failed state has lead the weak-minded to internalise this. They literally have not one ounce of patriotism or hope for Somalia.

I can relate to this to an extent. I wouldn't have called it a dislike, more of a general disdain. I genuinely believe the Somali attitude and Somali culture in general is too obviously fucked up on too many fronts to play coy with, and to make matters I'm not a 'hope' person. Hope is too action-less, and you can't change the way things are, and many are far too comfortable with the status quo or pretend it's OK, so the pessimism becomes very real.

Lol this is 100% my dad, we used to be deeply entrenched in the Somali community when I was growing up but now it's the opposite

Somalis have a serious inferiority complex which is demomstrated in many different ways.
In the Middle East: Somalis have a serious inferiority complex towards Arabs. This is probably the most severe of them all, and has resulted in Somalis claiming fake arab lineage and trying to align themselves to Arabs.
In Europe: Somalis also demonstrate an inferiority complex towards White people, which is demonstrated in the fact that Somalis are the most likely out of any muslim group to marry a white person. Although it may seem like Somalis have a distain for whites/gaals, as soon as said white person converts to Islam they are immediately admired by Somalis and can easily find a Somali wife. Some Somalis even call themselves Caucasians based on BS racist science findings from the 1800s.
In the West: Somalis also demonstrate an inferiority complex to other black people, believe it or not. This is demonstrated by both gangster Somalis and BLM Somalis. Gangster Somalis try hard to assimilate to AA culture by dressing like them, using their slang words and trying to get into rap music. They also form gangs and emulate them in street crimes. This is mostly seen in Toronto but can be seen everywhere. On the other hand, BLM somalis try to similarly copy blacks by claiming to have the same culture as them, overcompensating for their blackness and being at the forefront of the BLM movement, placing it before Somali issues.
I wonder why Somalis have such an inferiority complex. We were known to be a proud people, but what happened?

"Somalis demonstrate an inferiority complex to other black people"

Just because you imitate a group, doesn't meant that you feel like they are your superiors.

What if the whole imitating aspect occurs on a subconscious level, so that one is not even aware of the fact the he/she has begun to mimic.

Sometimes the only way to survive in your environment is to adapt, and imitating others is a form of adapting to your environment.

Self hating isn't criticising ones cultural flaws. That's called being an adult human being with objective critical thinking skills.

Self hate is when you constantly beg a group of humans not worth the value of used toilet paper and look for any excuse to put them on a pedestal. Even going as far as claiming you descend from them, despite all the available data and scientific literature pointing to the opposite.

My parents were the same, except we never were deeply entrenched. I don't think it qualifies as "self-hate". I would always call myself a Somali, even correct ppl on what I was when they guessed differently, which happens a lor, and there wasn't any certain other group that I claimed or even wished to be. It was just more of a disdain at the way things were, and a pessimism and distance. Pretty much exactly how Black described.

Arabs have always been a non-factor in my life. I don't know where the self-hate comes from, but none of my family speak Arabic, never been to Arab countries, don't live in Arab countries, and quite frankly don't care. We also don't conflate deen with "Arabs".
