I read the Reddit thread, he was actually demanding $100K for everything, including wedding, sooryo, yarad, meher, etc. He also wanted him to move from Michigan to Minnesota to be close to her parents and sell his house in Michigan instead of her moving there. He had other demands as well. He clearly doesn't want to have her married to him.

50-80k is steep but it's hardly the price of a house; it approaches the down-payment.

Also, our brothers and cousins chip in; I literally have to help my distant maternal cousin with at least 2k for his 80k dowry. 8th cousins are still considered family, so that's how we manage.
