Somali-Egyptian relations

This article discusses the ongoing Ethiopia-Egypt tension regarding the dam and Somalia's controversial neutrality. As the Arab League nation with the most animosity towards Ethiopia, it was generally expected that Somalia would wholeheartedly support the AL's resolutions but Somalia refused to participate. The article notes that Egypt has not really been as active in Somalia today as it was in the 1950s to 1970s and that Somalia has moved towards relations with Ethiopia and Turkey.

What do you guys think?

Personally, I think Egypt has not been our closest friend of late but Ethiopia has done more harm than good to us. I think Somalia should wait it out but declare support for Egypt if this issue escalates further.

Before one comments, it is important to list Somalia and Egypt's history. During the trusteeship, the UN gave Colombia, Phillipines and Egypt supervision over the Italians during the 1950s. As one can expect, the former two did not really care whereas Gamal Abdel-Nasser used this opportunity as a means to prove his revolutionary credentials and "free" a fellow "Arab" Muslim nation.

This meant Abdel-Nasser appointed one of his most esteemed diplomats, Kamal El-Din Salah (Kamuldiin in Somali) as his point man in Somalia. They both agreed that the Italians were stifling progress on independence in Somalia and gave the SYL much needed support in the UN to push the case for independence. During this time, Somalis received scholarships to Al-Azhar and Kamuldiin was essentially given a blank cheque to support the SYL.

After independence, Egypt became one of the first nations to recognise Somalia as well as a military backer and one of the only African nations to support Somalia's claim to the Ogaden. However, after the war, one could argue that Egypt ignored Somalia as it went from a pan-Arabist to a relatively insular nation. There were the odd aid packages, the reconstruction of the defence ministry but they were not as present as Turkey or even UAE/Qatar have been in recent years.

Friendship is a two-way street. It is not Somalia's fault that Egypt decided to look elsewhere for allies in Africa. Thats my piece.

Egypt is building a gas pipe with Israel and they have a very healthy relationship.

We have no obligation to support them and put ourselves in jeopardy. We can get much needed electricity from this dam.

Do not be fooled, they will not hesitate to throw us under the bus if it benefited them.

I said Egypt left the friendship with Somalia not the other way around. They're not friends anymore.

However, their tension with Ethiopia may allow us to flex some diplomatic muscle. As in, we can host negotiation conferences as we are considered both part of the Arab and Horn clique.

Somalia holding a negotiation conference is a joke. A few months ago we were on the verge of civil war.

if Egypt wasn't under the rule of a dictator I would strongly recommend supporting them over Ethiopia.

at end of the day, Ethiopia is our enemy, and building this dam will make them stronger and may start to build dams next to us.

Egypt is dominated by a corrupt network of corporations with special privileges from the government. The corporations are dominated by Egyptian military offices and veterans. They initially justified those type of schemes because it would presumably avoid another humiliating defeat at the hands of Israel.

Then the anti Israel oligarchs of Egypt signed a peace deal with Israel but no one doubts that Israel could smoke them again. You can count on the Egyptian government to choke their national economy in the name of catching up to Israel but dont expect they have any influence in Africa, from Libya to Ethiopia.

Ignore what Egyptian junta says about the Nile. The junta does not even have a coherent Nile foreign policy. What should matter is what Xabashistan does in kililka5aad. @xabashi is right. The dam gets filled.

The only other relevant voice is Sudan. They can actually the ongoing influence Tigray, Oromia, and Benishangul-Gomuz conflicts

Abdul Nassir was pro-communist like siyad barre but Anwar al Saddat was pro-western.

We already hosted conferences for IGAD and OIC (Org of Islamic Countries). It is very easy to do if you host it at Decale hotel at Aden Adde.

Somalia needs to rebuild its mediator CV. In governance, being a mediator is like a job, you need up to date skills. If you are good, people want to talk to you and offer you opportunities because they know you listen.

Regardless, Nasser was extremely crucial in Somalia gaining independence. Had Egypt not been one of the supervising nations on the UN committee, we would have had 30 more years of gumeeysi.

the supreme leader of MBH was sad and used to say how can a nation be torn into french and British and Italian Somali and the people who want to break the nation use the banner of Islam and freedom, this is unacceptable and is against the orders of Allah and against the common logic.

Somalia is in no position to be diplomatically relevant in the foreseeable future but i respect u r nostalgic sentiments

This is the perfect opportunity. There is no-one more relevant to mediate this issue. We are both in the Arab League and an ally to Abiy Ahmed.

Edit: Apparently, Somalia already offered according to Egyptian media.

Who is MBH. If you're talking about Barre, fadlan do not bring him into this thread.

we should be anti ethiopia by default. if they finish the gerd dam would they turn to our rivers? dont underestimate xabashis i wouldnt be suprise if they cut through mountains just to dam our rivers. if somalia wasnt a failed state then a competent government would get themselves arab league support for galbeed. egypt gets a destabilized ethiopia out of it and sudan would be wise to stay in line with jaamacadda carabta. until galbeed is ours ethiopia will have water hegemony over us due to somalis being 100s of kms away from our river sources.
