I'm not sure why one would carry this over a sword in battle, I don't know how popular of a close range weapon choice this was. I saw one antique auction site label this as a "slavers club" which I don't know how accurate that is. Who's beating their slave with a club that's too brutal.

This might sound weird but the clubs with blades on them are often time than not thrown on the
enemy. Once they get stuck some of them cannot be pulled back. Massai today still throw their
clubs thought they don't have a blade on them.

How important were clubs for somali warriors? Well a greek traveler noted that pastoralist
living on the opposite coast of arabia felix had clubs as their primary weapons and why not they
were easily manufactured cheap and affordable everyone had access to them and they were
multipurposed, all you needed was a sutrdy piece of wood. It's one of the oldest weapons somalis ever used and I like how diverse and creative they look. When the romans invaded yemen around the same time they noted that people in yemen had axes as their primary waopone.
