Dianne Abbot (the first black MP) graduated from Cambridge before she was elected. Perhaps I might travel to America, I'm sure it would be a spectacle to see a Somali with a clean British accent.

More power to her. It's actually even more impressive that she would push herself forward despite being limited in spoken English. Also, I'm sure it didn't just take balls, there was probably a lot of skill involved including being able to persuade other clans to vote for you.

That thought never occurred to me. I assumed the Somaliniimo alone would rally them to vote for her, but yeah that was probably difficult to do.

A lot are more focused on material possessions and sending money/ getting cribs back home.
I don’t know. I think environment is really important when kids are growing up...alx a lot are doing well, though.

My hooyo always says that lacaagta ma is khariiso so if Somalis had a lot of money it would show up in how they live, what they eat, etc. Not disputing what you’re saying but I don’t think Somalis are swimming in money like that.

Then your hooyo has not seen rich people huuno. Real rich people are stingy. they dont spend. I know a lady who walks in rags, begs people money left and right, but her bank is fat. She went to Hajj, took her son with her, all expense paid. Only poor people spend their money and show off

A lot of Somalis think they’re finessing when in reality, they're moving backwards. Telling the government you make no money so that you can live in a post world war 2 dwelling with rats as inhabitants is hardly considered “finessing” or “levelling up.” But I don’t think we’re ready for that conversation yet.

That’s why so many turn to gangs to earn money. You have kids so the government can give you money, only to turn around and withhold it from them. I can understand putting the money away and saving for their post secondary education, but they don’t even do that. Waa khasaaro.

This, people always blame the kids, but it's always the parents faults. They don't even save for post secondary education, the kids that make it still take the massive loans.

But it's a mindset they can't remove, it comes with coming from post war Somalia. insha'Allah over time it gets better. At least the kids grow up with western ideals and mindsets (I know the downsides of this).

Lol I doubt it. I’ve seen how somalis scam and get benefits under false pretenses, making themselves appear less fortunate than they are. I know that a large percentage of Somali truck drivers ( the main job for Somali fathers in America) report no income to the gov as trucking pay isn’t trackable by the department of benefits. This is mostly used to continue getting heath care coverage.

Aren’t houses and living costs expensive in Silicon valley? How do these Somalis manage .

you can always fine some holes in the government system if you dig deep. California isn't a welfare state. low income housing and section 8 programs are hard to come by. those somalis without a section 8 move to isolated cities in the US providing a movable section 8 programs. once they obtain their section 8 voucher, they move back to silicon valley and section 8 will cover 2/3 of their rent and the husband who legally doesn't exit can gross as much as 60k after expenses as an uber driver in silicon valley.
