Mental health is now a growing concern here in the West especially in the UK. It's becoming more normal to open up. People look after their physical health - why not your mental/psychological health too?

I've had lots of personal problems which I've not really discussed with family because to put it bluntly, I don't think they would understand.

So I figured why not see a professional. So I searched for someone meeting 3 criteria: Male, over 40, lived within 50km radius.

I found him. We arranged to meet after I finished work. His office was very sophisticated. Easy cummutable distance and I got there quickly. He seemed friendly, looks slightly older in person (which is fine). We sat down and he offered me a glass of water, then I chatted away. For 1hr. I kept talking non-stop. About my life, my issues, my struggles, areas I need to work on etc.

Then after it was all over he said... "I don't know about you, but I'm actually exhausted listening to you"...

:wtf:

That's it! I won't be booking another session with him again! WTF!!
Its impossible that you do not have a person to talk to, your entire family cannot be like dickheads towards you when you open up, what about the community, local wadaad, there should be someone who you can sit down and talk to for hours entirely for free.

Remember the one who will get most disappointed or upset is the one who actually cares about you, so its on you to build on that relationship to a stage where its open and honest.

The therapist doesn't care about you obviously, he is there to get paid, and its actually a stranger who have nothing to do with you as a person, your culture etc, also cadaanka need therapist they have tiny families and a culture of you are on your own, they kick out their kids at 18 and the kids throw the parents in old peoples homes when they are old in need of care.

Noone will care
thats why therapy exists

Try a woman therapist.

You are paying good money for a grown ass man to sit and listen to you talk. Don’t you have any semblance of shame in your psyche? It’s time for you to grow up sxb

Go make salat and talk to God or go call your brothers/friends. Stop being a victim. You know what you need to do to make things in your life right. You are a Somali Muslim. It’s time you start acting like it.

I’m so sorry to hear this, I’ve had therapy before and there have been times when I have rambled non stop. That therapist could have stopped you at any point and offered his advice or his input. It was extremely unprofessional for him to say what he said and I think you should report him.

I agree that a relationship with Allah is important but sometimes people have mental illness that requires professional help
With all due respect, whatever this brother/sister is going through is in no way a mental illness. When a person has a serious mental illness, I agree, they should seek professional help, but most people see shrinks because they are stressed out and are looking for ways to vent without judgement. I think complaining and telling your problems to Allah is the best for smaller stuff liike that.

I hope you are joking. Mental health is really not something us Somalis especially should be joking about. So many suffer in silence instead of talking to a therapist
