Ogaden Basin​

Exploration in the Ogaden Basin kilometers began in the 1920s. It covers an area of 350 thousand square kilometers. The Calub gas field in the Ogaden region was discovered in 1973 which made it one of the earliest finds in the area.

Two recent discoveries were also made in Dohar and El Kuran, areas in the Ogaden Basin, in addition to the Netherland, Swell & Associates’ finding. The El Kuran discovery was made by a UK company called New Age Mining while Poly-GCL, a Chinese company, made the discovery in Dohar. The petroleum reserve at Dohar which is located between Calub and Hilala is estimated at 3 TCF.

Ethiopia announced in 2019 that it would build a 767KM natural gas pipeline from Calub and Hilala to the port of Djibouti. The construction of the pipeline is expected to begin in the near future. A quarter of the country has already been mapped with Full Tensor Gravity and 6 known basins that contain hydrocarbon are identified and the Ogaden Basin is one of them.

In 1945, the American Sinclair Oil Corporation entered the Ogaden region at the behest of Emperor Haile Selassie, but was hindered due to the citizens of Wardheer organizing mass demonstrations against them.

The German oil firm, Gewerkschaft Elwerath built roads and conducted exploration operations in 1959, within the Ogaden basin.

Between the years, 1950 and 1995, approximately 43 wells have been drilled in the Ogaden region.

In 1972-1974, an American company called Tenneco Oil Exploration drilled the first exploration well in the Elkuran area and discovered an estimated 68 million cubic meters or 2.4 billion cubic feet of gas.

The years 1977, 1978 and 1988 saw war between Somalia and Ethiopia for control of this resource rich region, making it impossible to develop the discovered gas.

Soviet Petroleum Exploration Expedition or SPEE confirmed extensive gas reserves in the Calub and Hilala areas of the Ogaden basin in 1980’s estimating them at 118 billion cubic meters.

Since 1984, the ONLF or the Ogaden National Liberation Front has been fighting successive Ethiopian governments for self determination.

Dont look at todays prices, price has already been locked and Ethiopia owns china 40 billion $

it would be nice if nations sold at current market prices, but deal was signed years ago, just like Egypt, it supplies Israel at 1 dollar per british thermal unit million though prices were as high as 15$ then Israel sold to japan, otherwise Egypt would be Israel 29 billion in damages as it signed to sell the deal for that price for 20 years

anyways Insha Allah it wont go anywhere, America and west will not allow neither will Ogadens allow it, they have been trying this for decades

in 2019 an Ogadens lad with AK47 shot the tires of a vehicle taking samples of the oil, it shut down the entire place and Ethiopia knows last thing it wants is a fight with Ogaden civilians
