Small-time thoughts on Futuh Al-Habasha

A Laandheere always pays his debts
Imam Ahmed Gurey defeated Abyssinians and the Portugese Empire at their height (historians claim 16th century, 1540-1580, was their peak golden age). That's the equivalent of US going to war in mid-20th century, actual warfare and actually losing (not this guerrilla psuedo-warfare downing of a black hawk and celebrating it as your D-Day). The closest this resembles in today's context is Vietnam War, with Ottoman's replacing Soviets I guess.

Ahmed Gurey's identity being obfuscated from us Somalis is probably the greatest blessing, given he cannot be venerated and those who have an obsession with clinging onto property, people, power won't be able to say: 'Unug ninkaan leh'.

The most interesting hidden fact about the war is that Vasco Da Gama's son, Christopher Da Gama, died in battle. Typical Abyssinians, they cannot defeat Somalis mano a mano, but need foreign aid and troops to intervene, it is as true in the 15th century as it is in 2006. Yet they still remain the poster child of East Africa (because of their Christian Orthodoxy and this false 'Judeo-Christian' values that the West believes they are somewhat a part of, at least closer than the uncouthed mujahideen tribal Somalis).

Axmed Gurey AUN and Nuur Ibn Mujaahid AUN are underrated mujhadeen in the Islamic world. They should be more well known :wow:

Several 10s of millions of Oromos(lowkey don't mind the Muslim ones actually seeking refugee) and Christian habash will flood our homeland with Many Potentially settling for good. Dreadful day

It’s actually revisionism to state Gurey’s lineage is “unknown” or “obfuscated”. Ppl can dispute his tribal background with their own suggestions if they have manuscripts or documents, never seen one from them but folks surely do love this topic yet never prove themselves, but denying his immediate and extended family members is unheard of. Ahmed Gurey is not Siad Barre. One came to power in a coup as an unknown officer, the other was a descendant of rulers, married into ruling families and left sons and brothers who ruled after him. We are going against Occams Razor to find inconsistencies and yet we are unable to draw alternative view of what we know. News flash, this was less than 5 centuries ago. Even Shami a Harari of Turkish/Arab origin could access ottoman and portugese records while most of us are misreading badly translated english versions of a Futuh unoriginal copy. Somali brothers need to humble themselves. Gurey is a Karanle from a well known family (Reer Ibrahim) that wielded significant influence up untill colonial times. The biggest tariqa of Harar was founded by Karanle (Reer Ibrahim) mashayikh. Its unanimous with many Germans such as Manfred Kropp who wrote Ethiopian history of the 20th century, Paulitschke who met Rer Ibrahim in the 19th century and said they were the first Somalis in the land and are the most important of people, several European institutes have taken from Ahmed Shami, Berhanu Kamal wrote his own book in Amharic today and has 30 books on Ethiopian history and confirms the same lineage, Layla Sabag a Syrian writer the same.

Somalis always obsess over ONE figure/leader of a movement, instead of the countless brave soldiers that made it possible.

They were ALL heroes.
Its the Great man theory. Within the specific context of Somalis that is we look for and venerate highly the Mujahideen statesman, who defends his land against invaders. Ahmed Gurey, MAH, Mohamoud Ali Shire, Omar Samatar. That's why so many were initially drawn to Kacaan propaganda and genuinely believed MSB was part of this long historic list of Somali leaders who were statesmen and brave anti-colonialists when he invaded Ogaden.

But I agree with you, its all about cadaalad and the people's history is one where everyone gets their name sung not just one "leader", which was the essence of SYL imo, 13 youth come together and plan a bottom-up program of Somali unity from a small storefront on Via Roma in early 1940's, thats as least "hollywood" and sensationalised as it gets, but it was most effective and fair. People's history > Great Man Theory
