Before and during the rise of Islam the Slavic migration started in which numerous tribes of Slavs overran the Byzantine defenses at the Danube river pushing south during the struggle all of the Byzantines mainland European holdings were taken save for a few coastal hold outs like Thessalonikia,Athens,Corinth, and Constantinople this was the beginning of the Byzantine dark age for a period between the 610s to the early 700s all of the Balkans and Greece were throughly slavizied to the point were the Greek identity was almost wiped out. The Byzantine recounqered the land in the 700s sending in coloniest from magna Garcia,Sicily, and Anatolia to re-greekify hellas, within a few generations all the Slavs settled in Greece were hellinized and mixed with the settlers, so that today the average Greek is about 60% Greek,30% South Slavic, and 10% Albanian/Illyrian, in the south of Greece this figure is much lower.
