As a diaspora somali what's your opinion on this man? I've talked to a view somali elders and their opinions tend to be very mixed with some supporting him and viewing him as the only legitimate leader somalis ever had and others viewing him as the devil reincarnated. Younger somalis especially the one in the West are a paradox to me they swear they hate him but then reminisce about the "good old days" when his regime ruled over Somalia. To me personally I feel indifferent about him, what about you ?

I would say he is partly to blame for the current state of the Somali nation.
I won't deny he done a lot of good and had good qualities but what led to his downfall is the fact that he never wanted to hand over power. If only he just handed over the seat earlier maybe we would still have a governemtn

I agree, but tbh MSB isn't the reason Somalia have descended into anarchy today. I'm not a kacaanist myself, but the chaos the ensured following his downfall was caused by the rebels who were power-hungry themselves and didn't want to compromise for the sake of the country. They choose to let it all burn down to the ground, beyond the saving point. With that said, MSB himself had the opportunity to make necessary reforms well in advanced to save the nation from disintegrating. Sad all around
The guy famously said his only leaving buildings behind but not people. He wasn’t wrong nearly 34 years later and Somalia is a 4th world country. It’s quite pathetic to blame your current state on a man whose long dead and if you do ur indirectly saying only Siyad was able to hold Somalia together.
No one man can ever be personally responsible for such societal progress. The efforts of hundreds of thousands of Somali men and women if not millions in both public and private sectors, of all political and tribal affiliations were collectively responsible for Somalia’s success in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
True that, I don't support Siade's inhumane decision to target and genoicide certain clans, but at the same time I don't think we can use him as a scapegoat for Somalia decades long failure.

Should've let another lad taken the seat instead of having a "revolution" which burned the state to the ground and brought somalia back to its pre colonial era politics where the Somali peninsula was a collection of small clan based states and their sultans who now just call themselves "autonomous states" and "President"
Does anyone else draw a parallel between the fall of the Ajuuran empire and Somali Republic? Both where based around the same area and controlled somewhat similar territories. Only for a clan rebellion to take it all down due to bad guys at the top and bring about a collection of successor states which are small clan based states.
I'm a Djiboutian so personally I don't have an opinion on him. I have no family in Somalia that I know about, only Djibouti & Galbeed. Though I do like somalia under his rule was able to help us get independence.
He shouldn't have gone to war in 1977 with Ethiopia. The soviets originally supported him but Ethiopia overthrew their monarchy and became communist so now invasion was a big no no. Barre should have not relied too much on the soviets but instead built ties to the Americans and West and played them against each other to benefit somalia like non aligned countries such as Egypt under Nasser.
ALSO EDIT: Siad barre did try forming ties with the US after the soviets betrayed him but it was too late as the war had begun and the US didn't send much to help. He should've known invading another communist state would've gotten him smacked up by the Eastern bloc. Barre should have known this and built ties to the Americans a couple years before and get the necessary weaponry to fight the invasion. It would have probably turned out a proxy war but somaliweyn would other unite or the horn would all balkanise, including Ethiopia, so it's much better time line than what we have now.
There could be many ways to get ogaden back, ethiopia is a weak state. Funding and arming groups in galbeed would be a good start. Have them choke the Ethiopian government by having news Ely 1/3 of their land (ogaden) be in constant war with a steady supply of arms crossing the border killing Ethiopian soldiers in the tens of thousands. If they do a crackdown which knowing Ethiopia would probably be borderline genocidal judging by how they handle people like trigray, Somalia could then invade and get the "international community" on their side as a war to save their kin from genocide. The problem was that no one knows Eastern Ethiopia is somali so they just saw a nationalist dictator invading another communist state.

absolutely. Collectively the responsibility lies in our inability to resolve our problems amicably. But I believe Somalia’s national problems are a microcosm of our individual selves. I see obesity as the corruption of the human body and a microcosm of corruption in government. But then I see a mother who is very critical of corruption in the Somali government encourage her son in his obesity. Not realizing that for the incredible resource that this young man’s body can potentially be, it is not only being not utilized but actually actively degraded in a similar way that our national resources (incl. Human Resources) are being underutilized and degraded. When we realize we really need to be the change we want to see, we will be one the right track.

If our army wasn't weakened and fragmented after the Ethiopian war and MSB as well did some reforms to ensure the future of our country we would've had a strong Somali nation today.. Instead our army got crushed by Ethiopian war with Soviet assistance then MSB used what was left of the army against our citizens and this is the root cause of the chaos and anarchy that followed afterwards.I agree, but tbh MSB isn't the reason Somalia have descended into anarchy today. The Kacaan destroyed a promising democracy and replaced it with typical African cronyism. Peaceful competition in developing countries can only be achieved by democracy. Clan/Ethnic competition and animosity won't grow into genocidal hatred in a democracy.
Compare Senegal/Kenya/Malaysia/India to Mali/Ethiopia/Myanmar/China in terms of bloodshed in the last 60 years.
For me to accept trading democracy, he'd have to have done what Suharto did for Indonesia and make Somalia at least 5-6x wealthier, what happened? The Kacaan raised Somalia's GDP per capita by $1.5 a year. $35 over 21 years.
Compare Senegal/Kenya/Malaysia/India to Mali/Ethiopia/Myanmar/China in terms of bloodshed in the last 60 years.
