Depends what constitutes extreme segregation? Your question will differ based on paradigmatic assumptions.Hmmm
On the back of this topic;
Does Islam condone extreme segregation of genders, or did Arab culture seep into islamic texts. Because someone convince me, how extreme gender segregation is healthy for society.
One thing is clear, segregation between the genders is commanded by Allah and his messenger peace be upon him via various hadiths and inferences from the Quran particularly in Surah Al Ahzab. These are direct quotes from Allah and his messenger and is what Islamic segregation is based not Arab culture.
There is a concept whereby legal rulings are based on `urf (accepted cultural norms) but this is in regards to matters that do not have divine commentary.
Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) said that after Allahโs Messenger (May peace and blessings be upon him) said "as-Salamu โAlaykum wa Rahmatullahโ twice announcing the end of prayer, women would stand up and leave. He would stay for a while before leaving. Ibn Shihab said that he thought that the staying of the Prophet (May peace and blessings be upon him) was in order for the women to be able to leave before the men who wanted to depart."
Narrated by al-Bukhari under No. 793.
Abu Usayd Al Ansari heard the Messenger of Allah (๏ทบ) say when he was coming out of the mosque, and men and women were mingled in the road: Draw back, for you must not walk in the middle of the road; keep to the sides of the road. Then women were keeping so close to the wall that their garments were rubbing against it.
