Those were small minority and plus those women worked as illegal and never had to stay and sleep in their houses. Also, they got paid regular unlike the legal workers. They used to come and go as they want(freedom). If they don't like the house, they ran away and leave (benefits of having their own passports).
But in case Of legal organized workers, the girls had to stay and sleep in their employers' homes and can not ran away due lack of their documents. Saudi is the worst country for any immigrants around the world and Somalis should stay away from it.

I'm not an expert in these things, but surely if you're going there illegally means they're afforded even less rights (and the chance to take their passport) whereas when it's government sponsored the hosts have less power over them.

Nope, the asaudi families paid huge money to bring servants from employment offices and long waiting periods. So, they get illegal maid, they can not request any demands from her like passports(deny having it). They need her more than she needs them.
