Rumination is actually torture

The mind is a weird thing. When you ruminate on something, the best thing to do is one seek help with Allah. Read Quran, pray and meditate.

After this, you should not try to control the thoughts and associated emotions that come with it. Just let yourself feel the full brunt of the repeating stuff in your head and let the bad and anxious associated emotions wash over your body. Observe them and know that these thoughts and emotions are not you. Delve into them and let go of whatever the trigger might be. Letting go involves understanding the issue, acceptance and moving on.

Strangely enough this is how you control your mind, you don't try to control it in the normal strict sense of the word as we would in the physical realm. You let things play out and then slowly introduce other thoughts to override the problematic ones

nafta waa ina kheyr badan usheegtid. Self soothe yourself by telling yourself kind words or affirmations that you know are true about you. Another way is to actively listen to the Quran or say dhikr with mindfulness.

If you're ruminating about something someone said or did to you, acknowledge how it made you feel and how hurtful it was. Then remind yourself that you deserve better. Some people choose to not see the good in others and try to hurt them any way they can. Remind yourself that only insecure people behave that way and that they are only projecting their inner negativity outward.
