I want to do this post to help Somalis navigate the issues related to "billing" (thats what they call it) people back home. Second, i want to start dialog about holding our familes accountable. and Third, you are not a prostitute, but no one hates you more than a family members you tell "No". So protect yourself.
Rule 1 in Billing: Always give yourself an Exit!
Before you open that door to sending money home, you should tell them that you will do 12 month cycles, and do a performance reviews after 12 months (just like any company in America). if they earned no money, gave no zakat, or sadaqa then you will lower it by 20%, until you dont have to pay them no more.
Rule 2 in Billing: Never give to "students", people without kids, or anyone under 25 years old (unless extreme situations).
if they cannot feed themselves, you will always have to feed them.
Rule 3 in Billing: Don't give to only one person, give to minimum of 3.
This rule creates competition, and removes you as the primary antagonist. Remember, they call it Billing because they consider it a monthly subscription, but the more you give the less they will respect it, the harsh reality is "easy money" becomes invisible, they expect it, and creates dependency, and that is not how we fix generational poverty.
Diaspora money is 40% of the economy, and we have a Presidents calling us "not somalis" because we dont have "citizenships", we need to put our money where their mouths are, just look at the philipines with 32% of voters being diaspora and they only contribute 8% to GDP, what about us? the simple truth is easy money is not respected and we need to end the cycle of poverty.
