I have been talking with my parents a lot trying to learn more about the somali culture.
My parents told me, many Somali people got married without the consent of their parents but from a local sheikh cause they were in a another city, them days their was no landlines or mobiles to convey the message their daughter was married etc, the ways parents found out their daughters were married was when people would leave the city and go the city the daughters parents lived and tell them verbally.
I think this isn't right, Islamically.
The father should be notified straight away before any nikah is done, and if the father has passed away it should be his brothers or cousins responsibility to take the role of giving away his daughter.
This means many of our parents could be born out of wedlock.
