This reminds me. I saw a post about a Somali woman in the US army and people were freaking out at her, Somali and ajanabi alike. What’s wrong with fighting for the country that has given you freedom, opportunity and treats you with dignity? Maybe we need to drop the “sheegaad” behaviour.

People rightly freaked out. She is just cannon fodder for a country that kills muslims, especially from her own ethnic group. Its extremely stupid to do something clearly against your intrests.

He is kind of right.
A constitutional republic is supposed to help with that. People of different identities and beliefs, living together semi-harmoniously (with the help of the threat of state violence). What do me, an Indian Hindu, Filipino Catholic, English atheist have in common? Not much (we both human I know ). Just an agreement on how to live together in society. We don't intermarry, chances are we might not even like each other very much. Once people start rescinding rights for certain groups, that undermines the agreement people had in the first place.
Maybe I'm too much of an idealist.

Even though its 'ideal", without any baseline social/political agreement, living with your "ethnic group" and even your own "clan" becomes burdensome.
This is what Somalia* is trying to work on.

The difference between America and Europe is that America is a state-nation rather than being a nation-state. In essence, being apart of the same nation is what causes Americans to be one people. This differs from a majority of states in Europe and other regions where shared cultural identity is the reason for establishing a state. So deviating from this shared cultural identity is met with greater hostility.
