LATEST: Somali Community Impacted by Recent Crime, Arrests.

The second man charged in a shooting in Rochester last month made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Watch the video.

27-year-old Abdirahman Abdullahi is charged with attempted second degree murder along with first and second degree assault.

Abdullahi’s arrest is the latest in a string of arrests and crimes that law enforcement say have rocked the local Somali community.

“I’ve been here 20 years and now it’s the first time I see that you know, crime is going up so we usually work together, you know, how we can eliminate or reduce that is tough,” said Omar Nur, Director of Somalia Rebuild Organization in Rochester.

Since the start of the year, a handful of violent crimes have hit Olmsted County: the murder of Garad Roble in March, a drive-by shooting in April and a shooting at Meadow Park Apartments in August.

“This particular incident was a very, very violent incident. It involved a shooting at point blank range. Our victim is very, very seriously injured and certainly we believe that the shooting was intended to kill him,” said Olmsted County Attorney Mark Ostrem.
On August 7th, police responded to a call of a shooting in Southeast Rochester.

When they arrived, court documents say they found a man in the hallway shot multiple times in his chest, leg and the back of his head.
Court documents say the injuries left the victim, who police are not naming because of serious concerns for his safety, paralyzed.

“It’s similar in type to a number of other incidents that we’ve experienced in the city within the last couple of years, so there’s a sense that this level of violence has been ongoing for a while,” Ostrem said.

Although the Somali community in Rochester is still relatively small, Nur said it’s growing, and with a growing population comes more crime.

“The Somali community, we understand we have a large number who live in Rochester, almost 8,000 people, and we know the law system
knows our community boys,” Nur said.

A few weeks ago another man, Iman Iman, was charged in the shooting at Meadow Park Apartments.

At the time of the shooting, Iman was out on bail for two attempted first degree murder charges for a drive-by shooting in April.
With the investigations still ongoing, Ostrem said the most recent arrest might not be the last.

“It seems no matter how many times we arrest, charge, convict people, it seems there’s somebody else that kind of comes into the fold, picks up the slack,” Ostrem said.

Nur said the Somali community is choosing to focus on the positive.

“We understand we have some challenges because we are new here. There’s a big gap between the lifestyle over there and here, but from now on every family you know they have at least one graduating for the university. That is a role model to the younger generations,” he said.

Abdullahi is being held on $5 million unconditional bail at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center, where his alleged co-conspirator, Iman Iman, is also being held.

9/10/19 - Another Rochester man is facing charges after a shooting in Southeast Rochester in early August.

According to Rochester Police Captain Casey Moilanen, officers arrested 27-year-old Abdirahman Abdullahi this week near Colonial Lanes in Rochester. Officers were at the bowling alley on a separate harassment call and recognized Abdullahi. Capt. Moilanen said Abdullahi was wanted on attempted murder charges.

That shooting happened on August 7 at the Meadow Park Apartments. Another man, Iman Iman, was charged with attempted 2nd-degree murder on August 21.

Capt. Moilanen said both Iman and Abdullahi have "terrorized the Somali community in Rochester" and added he wants them to be "held accountable" for their actions.

Capt. Moilanen went on to say that the two could be tied to other incidents in the city. As we've reported, Iman is also facing serious charges from a shooting in April.

Capt. Moilanen said the victim in the August 7 shooting is still alive. He said he wouldn't disclose a motive and couldn't comment further on the case because he said there has been so much violence with this group of people that he's worried for the safety of other Rochester residents.
