1. Made Somalia join Arab league
2. Choose Latin alphabet over Osmanya
3. Ogaden war
4. Used tribalism to divide Somali people

Concentrating investment and resources in the south was not a mistake from Barre, it was by far the smartest thing to do. Nothing north of Hiiraan is seriously viable longterm or worth the return on capital.

The only mistake he made was not seriously developing the Juba River valley and Kismaayo alongside Xamar. Those 2 cities should have been for Somalia what Nairobi & Mombasa is for Kenya.

A smart thing to have done is slowly draw people from above Hiiraan into settling in the riverine areas so that the population did not explode in semi-deserts but in Middle Juba/Shabelle, etc. A fair compromise IMO

It wasn't even popular among the linguists in Somali language committee that recommended Latin script in the 60s

Teaching Osmanya script waste of money. Latin alphabet was perfect selection english is language of the world and it’s easy to read somali or English once alphabet is learnt. The SYL actually made the choice to pick the Latin script IN 1962.

UNESCO also made their own findings in 1966 and declared that the SYL should pick the Latin script.

It was unable to pass parliament due to Islamic sheikhs putting pressure on MPs to chose Arabic instead.

When Barre took power, he dissolved parliament, allowing him to finalise the transition.

Somalis need to learn their history wallahi.

The SYL commissioned a committee to pick Somalia’s next script in 1962. They only ever considered Latin and Arabic, choosing Latin.

The commission was headed by Muse Galal.

Also the SYL newspaper used to use Latin script in the 1950s, before independence.

The idea that the Kacaan created the Latin script is actually propaganda.The SYL were using it at least a decade before Barre “introduced” it.

One thing for sure is that the SYL were not pro Osmanya.

It’s a one off alphabet system, more people maybe would support it if it had ancient basis and there were important historical documents that needed translating. This script was created recently 1920 . unlike Ethiopias mumbo jumbo which is worth learning for them since it’s been in use for over 1 thousand years
