Re-visiting the origins of the SNM & Mengistu's support for it.

''In 1981, the Mengistu government began to support the Somali National Movement (SNM).
The resulting war by the SNM against the WSLF was an important element in the Ethiopian strategy, and it was resoundingly successful.
The formation of the SNM was the outcome of systematic discrimination and human rights abuse against members of the Isaaq clan, which predominates in northern Somalia, by the
Siad Barre government.
Many abuses against the civilian population of northern Somalia, especially those living in the border area, were committed by the WSLF. Killing, looting and rape were common from 1978 onwards.
In late 1978, Isaaq elders petitioned President Siad to form an Isaaq wing of the WSLF, which would be able to protect local civilians. This organization, known as Afraad, the "fourth unit," became operational in 1979. It immediately came into armed conflict with the
main (Ogaden clan) forces of the WSLF.
Shortly afterwards, an Isaaq army officer arrested leading WSLF fighters at Gobyar who had been harassing and abusing the local population; they were taken to Gebiley and executed.
The army command in Hargeisa was then transferred to General Gani, a Marehan and a clansman of the president; one of the changes that followed was the forcible transfer of the Afraad away from the border zone. However, many members of the Afraad became guerrilla fighters in their own right and continued the inter-clan conflict, which intensified in 1981.
Other grievances felt by the Isaaq included the preferential treatment of Ogadeni refugees compared to the local population, in terms of access to education, health care and services, and discrimination against Isaaqs in government and army posts and in business.
A dispute over access to the grazing in the Haud reserve was also flaring. After prolonged talks, leading members of the Isaaq clan met in London in April 1981, to form the Somali National Movement (SNM). In January 1982, they negotiated with the Ethiopian government to obtain a base and arms. The SNM soon became active in the border area, supporting the Isaaq clan in its ongoing conflict with the Ogaden clan. In October 1982, there was fierce fighting in the Gashaamo area.
The war between the Isaaq-SNM and the Ogaden-WSLF involved violence against civilians, by both forces and on both sides of the border. At first, the abuses were almost entirely by the WSLF, because it had a near-monopoly on arms. Lorries were ambushed, traders
stopped and robbed, houses looted, animals stolen, women raped and civilians killed.
In early 1979, between Wajale and Alleybadey, two WSLF fighters raped a woman, whose teenage brother then retaliated by shooting the fighters. The commander of the WSLF unit then arrived
and summarily executed the boy and two other family members.
One SNM abuse occurred in December 1981 when Isaaq fighters stopped a truck at Dhaberooble, between Warder and Degahabur, and killed six WSLF fighters and 13 civilians,
all members of the Ogaden clan.
Clashes between the fronts were intense during late 1982 and 1983. The SNM succeeded in cutting the WSLF off from its rear bases in northern Somalia. Together with the Ethiopian army offensives, this was a fatal blow to the WSLF, which never recovered. There
was a final round of fighting in December 1984-January 1985, but by this time the WSLF was effectively finished.''

SNM's incredible success is remarkable given the intense pressures against the movement.

At one point, following the Ethiopia/Somalia accords in Djibouti, literally all three states agreed to pressure the SNM into submission:

- Djibouti completely shut its border crossing and barred Isaaq access
- Ethiopia stopped all support of SNM and requested its leaders to cease all activities from its side of the border
- Somalia mobilised the entire length of the Ethio/Somali border to squeeze the SNM out of their positions.

And we all know how it ended. SNM went through the Somali National Army and WSLF thugs like a hot knife going through butter, and amazingly reached all major towns in Somaliland and kicked the heavily-militarised units out of their positions.

Their achievements fill any sane person with nothing but pure awe.

Show me any other Somali rebel group that was sophisticated enough to conduct hollywood-movie-style prison breaks on the most heavily guarded prisons in the entire Somali Republic:

One of the funniest videos I've ever seen was one of the Somali diplomats in the London trying to explain away why SNM were driving through the north of the former Somali Republic with tanks they looted from defeated Somali Army units, she could barely contain her shock:

"This is nothing new, driving tanks has always been part of Somali culture and tradition" :drakelaugh:

Amazing history brothers of Somaliland. I often wonder why, when the European media outlets mention the other great rebel armies of the time, such as the EPLF, TPLF, and others, they overlook or rarely mention the SNM?

EPLF and TPLF ruled the territory they secured and actually became governing bodies.

What sets SNM apart from every single rebel group in the region is that after they defeated afweyne they voluntarily gave up control and allowed a civilian government to ascend, this is unheard of in African politics.

because in jan 1991 berbera and other places were under a general who was siad barre's fellow clansmen. after barre was ousted from mogadishu the general was still in the north for days until the national army was formally disbanded.

The SNM would have been crushed if it weren’t for hawiye that took the capital and the fighting in the south. They were hiding in bushes and mountains until then like al shabab in puntland’s mountains.

Dwelling in what-ifs is typical of losers who keep making up imaginary scenarios as a form of escapism.

Your fantasy makes no sense for two main reasons:

1. SNM created USC:

2. SNM held the majority of the Somali army, all of the mechanised and strongest units were stationed in the north:

Another Kacaanist fantasy:

US Department of the Army: Analysis of Somalia, December 1993

The situation in northern Somalia was even more serious for the provisional government. The dominant SNM, whose fighters had evicted Siad Barre's forces from almost all of Woqooyi Galbeed, Togdheer, and Sanaag regions as early as October 1990, had also captured the besieged garrisons at Berbera, Burao, and Hargeysa at the end of January; they were not prepared to hand over control to the new government in Mogadishu. Like its counterparts in the south, the SNM criticized the USC's unilateral takeover of the central government, and the SNM leadership refused to participate in USC-proposed unity talks.

How can SNM create USC a rebel group 1000km away you idiot, they didn’t help them with shit. Hawiye were the ones who took down Siyad Barre AUN, the idoor triangle were hiding in bushes until the news broke that USC took the capital.

SNM is the one who armed and funded the USC rebels and gave their camps to Caydid forces which was a stratgical move as it opened a second front in the south while SNM can focus more in the north where in 1988 they took Hargeysa briefly and Burco and the next year Ceerigabo and Caynaba fell in the hands of rebels.

One of the founders of USC was a hawiye member of SNM political committee and Caydiid when he joined the opposition SNM leaders welcomed him in Ethiopia and offered assistance on the formation of USC armed wing

Must be @World ‘s Eedo complaining about the SNM
:damn::damn:

Kacaanists generally act in the exact same way, first they try to pass off some random fake bit of history as a fact, and when it is eventually exposed as a lie they feign ignorance and pretend to not understand whats happening.

SNM created USC because:

1. SNM encouraged Hawiye to rebel
2. SNM provided the first USC military base which was Mustaxiil
3. SNM endowed USC with weapons and supplies
4. Hawiye leadership who actually created USC were ex-SNM

I can go on. Only a deranged kacaanist would try and argue he was not karbashed by Isaaq, but instead Hawiye were the ones who raped him... as if that makes any difference to the fact that he was abused on the battlefield and became the losing side of the Somali civil war.

"Guerilla warfare spread quickly to the central and southern parts of the country as Hawiye and other clans rebelled, receiving crucial financial and logistical support from the SNM. Eventually, the SNM would aid Gen. Mohamed Aideed’s successful ouster of Siad Barre from Mogadishu."
