Mogadishu doesnt look that bad anymore, and with some rebuilding and a coat of white paint, these buildings would look the same again. Also, Somalia was peaceful under Somali rule for almost thirty years so I don't get where this comes from. Hoping is not going to fix Somalia sadly, ATP people should start politically organizing. The Cuban Revolution happened with 82 people. if al-shebaab and isis somalia can form militias why not any decent somalis.

I know, it's frustrating seeing the lack of action. I'm too young to directly engage in politics yet but I want to create a grassroots movement by helping somalis first who will then be strong an educated enough to oppose the governments stupidity. My end goal is to open a law practice in Somalia.

Comparing pre-civil war colonial Xamar to post civil war Xamar is dishonesty at its finest. Anyone could look up videos and images of how Mogadishu look like from the 70s-80s and see it was a normal looking city therefore utterly destroying his point.

The place had infrastructure and architecture before those Italians even touched ground. Ibn Battuta already described it as a large city with wealthy merchants by 1332:

The Italians didn't build modern Mogadishu. I have gone over it before.

Mogadishu, by contrast, was already a fully functioning, bustling commercial city long before the Italians even arrived. They didn’t "build" Mogadishu they just inherited an already thriving urban center.

This how Mogadishu looked like before the Italians and it was not a shithole: It had mosques, multi storied whitewashed dwellings, storage facilities, madrassas, work shops and forts, and a wall with 5 gates surrounding it.

Many of these buildings and some historic districts were actually bulldozed by the Italians themselves against the wishes of locals.

When it comes to infrastructure or roads etc, the Italians didn't develop it either. They didn't expand the city or modernize it in any meaningful way. What they mostly did was plant a big decorative gate in the middle of the old city center, build a single church squeezed between centuries-old mosques and historic Somali buildings, and put up a lighthouse at the coast.

This is a description of Mogadishu and coastal towns under the Italians. It was not clean nor aesthetic. Somalis complained because the didn't allow us to the develop or improve it

When Somalis regained control after independence, Mogadishu rapidly expanded, growing from just 2 historic districts into 14 brand-new quarters built by Somalis themselves.

What built the city was actually the two Somali governments that came after . The Kacaan government cleaned most of the area,

They expanded the city into many new districts and started to clean it up. They built new landmarks, monuments, villas , housing, hotels, mosques, theaters, stadiums, streets ,roads and they planted trees, gardens etC

I don't think there is any worse than colonial propaganda, they destroy things and make life worse. But then take credit for bringing civilization. Dad walaan.

As for the so-called "railway" the Italians built, it wasn’t for public development , it was a short line designed purely to extract and export bananas. It didn’t serve the local population at all and was dismantled and destroyed during the British occupation.

Much of the credit should actually go to the SRC they built roads, a sewage system, hospitals, schools, stadiums, and a modern port. They extended the airport, introduced a water system that provided clean drinking water, and brought electricity and proper sanitation to the city.

The photo that twitter user used was not even colonial era. , it was during the Kacaan period, you can even see the yellow taxis that was implemented by them visible.

She showed a picture even where it shows Arubu Rukun mosque which centuries old and the hotel that Kacaan government built, next to various building complexes that are native built with regional architecture and paved roads also built by the Kacaan government.


And the picture on the right side is after Ethiopians bombarded Mogadishu back in 2006-2009 backed by American airstrikes and its from 2011. Most damage to historical buildings, districts actually came from American demolitions, airstrikes and Ethiopian bombing campaigns believe it or not both during the early 90s and 2006-2009.

The warlords and their various militias did not have that level of fire power to sustain or inflict that level of damage during their fighting.

It's still disingenuous to show a picture of a capital that has been bombarded from proxy conflicts/invasions/interventions. It's like me showing you photos of Staling grad or London after world war 2.

Just like those cities, Mogadishu quickly rebuilt itself back up again after 2012.

Somalia did this without massive foreign investments. Or large mulit-billion dollar aid and and wealth transfer that was given to Japan and other European countries by the united states "Marshall Plan" after world war 2.

It's really telling how racists and bigots have absolutely no interest in sharing and re-telling this success story how Somalia is rebounding in a major way because it doesn't help their narrative nor does it benefit to even admit this. They are just perpetually insecure people that have to imagine others to be beneath them on some racial level to feel comfortable with themselves. There is no point in trying to prove anything or react to those types of people, their biases are deeply ingrained.
