yeah I heard the come from southerns so did northerners buy it from them cuz my grandma up north had jewellery.

I have a question. Do northerners wear shaash? I have never seen yall wear it and I always assumed we all wore it until someone on tiktok replied to me saying you guys dont. However some refuted and said they do wear it. Is it a thing in the north? Genuine question
One of my friends is from PL and she said she wears it but its not common. Idk about north west though

Yeah we still have my mums saash from her saash saar, and we wear dirac shiid/baati that is saash patterned lol

Thats sick I didnt know that. I thought it was a very southern clothing that got spread throughout all of somaliweyn via trade like how the dirac originated from the north and alindi originated from the south

Cowrie shells come from bantus who use it deeply in their culture.. we were nomadic people for the majority so it's not reasonable that the traditional cloths or accessories would have cowries.
People recently started added cowries to the dhaqan for no good reason
Cowries have been used for thousands of years by people all across the world. Somalis live on a coast its natural that'd we'd use cowrie shells
Majority Somalis were nomads.. the people who made the somali cultural products were not coastal people
We have been trading with people from all over the world for millenia. You can find thousand year old Chinese pottery fragments deep in the Somali region of Ethiopia. So why wouldnt cowrie shells which are found all over the somali coast from zeila to Mogadishu not be a somali culutral product.
What meaning did they have in Somali nomadic culture? In Bantu culture, they have many meanings - from being used in divination to being used as currency
Not everything needs a meaning it can literally only be used as adornment just like in many other cultures
Adornments have meaning/ point
Things that are common in a culture have specific usage which in turn gives them meaning.
Also I have 100+ old nomadic somali pics saved and these cowrie shells only seem to be prevalent in newer photos
