My exact reasoning behind this as well.
Armenia was and still is supported by Russia. Armenia was part of the Soviet Union and they're part of Russia's version of the Common Wealth. Russia supports Armenia in order to counter Turkey, Turkey genocided Armenians first world war.
Karabakh is in Azerbaijan border but controlled by Armenian Azerbaijanians.
Russia can only help Armenia in secret or else things might get complicated, specially the gas pipelines which is controlled by Turkey and Azerbaijan. Besides former Soviet client states like Belarus and Kyrgystan are in major political turmoil which requires Putin's attention more than Armenia. Russias interference will jeopardise Russia-Turkey relationship

the grey is Azerbaijani land and was settled by Azeris (unlike Nagorno Karabakh region which is majority Armenian , RED) they had to flee when Armenia invaded in 94 , there are around 1.2 million internally displaced refugees in Azerbaijan, or roughly a tenth of its population. most of them from that grey area.
