There's a reason why military parades are more common in the Global South and authoritarian regimes compared to economically prosperous nations: they're a way for leaders to distract from internal issues by showcasing their strength.
Holding military parades to display toughness is misguided. Everyone knows that the U.S. has highly advanced, undisclosed military technology, just as the B-21 was kept secret for a long time. It's often wiser to remain discreet and wait for the right moment. There is no need for the US to show what it has, compare that to Russia who would line up its latest and greatest hardware. Now in Ukraine everyone realizes its all just posturing.
Walk softly and carry a big stick.
While it's understandable to hold parades for special occasions, they should be more celebratory rather than unnecessarily aggressive.
As Sun Tzu said, "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle."
Ultimately, public funds are better spent on infrastructure and services that benefit the people.
