Prisoners Freed

SSC was offered statehood, which wasn't something they could refuse. They know the FGS was neutral in that war and ignored or was silence about SL war crimes, but that offer too good to ignore. PL should have understood that, and started talks with SSC on how to proceed from there. But they went on the other direction and hosted buurmadhow. Complete petty and ciyaalnimo from Deni's side.
Deni is very arrogant in my opinion, acts as if the whole Somali political world revolves around him.. He was also one of the politicans behind the election of Qoslaye as the president.

Deni did not host Buurmadow. He is in Bosaso dealing with the fighting in the mountains. No one in Puntland knew even knew that Buurmadow was on the plane with the PL prisoners and the guy left the same day. The picture showing Deni with Buurmadow is fake.

Anyways, like I said before, SSC leadership aren’t some infallible naive children. No one forced them into becoming puppets for HSM nor is Puntland obliged to turn a blind eye. Deni has called for talks before privatey without a response from SSC leadership and even now that he has publicly asked for clarification, it’s radio silence except for SSC ministers making inflammatory remarks about Puntland’s borders in Sanaag. This isn’t the first time that a new federal state that Puntland has supported has turned caasi to gain favour with Xamar. So lets see how this plays out.

Puntland is wisely putting an end to the pro-Mogadishu, pro-Qatar, pro-China proxy growing on its doorstep. Sometimes the solution is worse than the problem it was meant to solve. SSC elites will no doubt pursue thier independence at all costs, likely leading to a confrontation between the two at some stage.

Generally if the opps are calling you wise/smart for a move then it’s the wrong move

As it stands the trajectory of SSC is a greater threat than Somaliland for the following reasons:

1) Erosion of federalism and election model
2) Potential territorial claims of SSC outside of SL borders into PL heartlands
3) SSC positioning itself as China proxy, PL naturally will have to distance to itself if it wants to court and maintain US interest which it appears to have a very strong interest in doing seeing China's growing ties to FGS
4) UAE vs Qatar interests

Geopolitical shifts, FGS and SL alignment with different powers, Puntland cannot stay neutral or isolated if wants to maintain its position. Difficult choices must be made.

So are you saying all the people Deni supported turned on him? Deni supported Qoslaye, he turned on him, Deni supported Madoobe and he turned on him, now Deni's new adventure is to form a friendly relationship with the seccesionists entity in the north who have been sending daesh recruits to PL.. In my opinion lack of influence is a sign of poor, social and diplomatic skills.. Don't take this as me suporting the Khatumo leadership against PL.. These bunch seem to be ungrateful towards PL in my opinion.. I wouid like to watch what they'll gain from the path they're on in the long run.. Time will tell.

Deni did not support HSM out of the kindness of his heart. He simply made a pact to get rid of Farmaajo. A far more shrewd opponent who used the Darood card while targeting Puntland and who tried to dismantle the Federal system. It’s called politics.

As for Madoobe, various Puntland Presidents supported Jubbaland and Madoobe long before Deni who simply continued this tradition. Deni did not have a special relationship with Madoobe nor did he bring him to power.

What you have to understand is that the attacks against Deni are the same attacks that were employed against all previous Puntland Presidents. From A Yusufto Cadde ( AUN to both), Faroole to Gaas. The same misinformation and backstabbing. All aimed at destabilising Puntland regardless of who sits on the chair. Puntland poured money and blood into reviving a system of governance in Xamar and are yet reviled by many. Would you call this a lack of influence or diplomacy?

Somali politics is dirty and there aren’t any permanent friends or foes. Just look at Firdhiye visiting Djibouti this week while during the LA war, SSC were showing weapons they said had been supplied by Djibouti to SL.

Puntland leaders have always supported those who are pro Federalism and the rule of law and often, this hasn’t be reciprocated. Deni isn’t the first PL President who has to deal with this.

1. Federalism is here to stay, SSC can play ball with FGS until they get what they need, SSC openly being against FGS isn’t necessary because the two biggest/successful FMS (PL/JL) are against them

2. This makes no sense & wouldn’t happen, like Garaad Jaamac said SSC can only happen WITH PL, if it doesn’t happen and SSC/PL reunite that’s still a W in my book

3. China proxy how? For having some pics with a Chinese delegation? For having one China policy that the US also acknowledges. By this logic FGS and USA are China proxies

4. AFAIK no UAE/Qatar interests in SSC but again who cares

Puntland will retain its position as the strongest and most successful FMS as it has done through many FGS admins so there’s no issue regarding whose in the Villa

The only difficult choice is whether to have two Harti FMS or one united powerhouse Harti FMS, the latter is worse for secessionists

Firstly I did not claim Deni suoorted Qoslaye out of kindness but I know he did this to get rid of Farmaajo, then Qoslaye betrayed him and I understand their relationship has been bad ever since.. You wrote Farmaajo was more dangerous to federalism than Qoslaye, how so? Both want to extend their term and call the shots from muqdisho, Qoslaye on top is a thief and corrupt, I don't think Farmaajo was as corrupt.

I think that the whole HSM betrayed Deni claim is an exaggeration. They both used each other for their own gain. Only possible “betrayal “ maybe have been from the MPs who privately pledged to Deni that they would vote for him only to switch on him at the end.

Deni would never have given up being President of Puntland to be a PM to HSM. Especially not when PMs always get fired so I honestly don’t think he went through all that for some PM seat.

As for Farmaajo he is far more dangerous to Puntland than HSM. They’re both anti Federalism true. However, not only is Farmajoo more charismatic, he could garner support amongst some Puntlanders using the Darood card while HSM is seen as an outsider so it would be easier to unite Reer Puntland and other Darood against him. This is why I called Farmajoo more shrewd. HSM’s antics are obvious for anyone to see.

By betrayal I did not mean that Qoslaye didn't choose him as his prime minister, I meant by the way Qoslaye turned against PL.. Anyway he's term is about to expire.. Do you think Deni has ambition of becoming Somalias president?

Understood.

Fair enough. I said that because people who often claim that HSM betrayed Deni say that it’s because he didn’t give the PM position to Deni which doesn’t make any sense. HSM was also hostile to Puntland in his previous term and was known to try destabilise Puntland by arming militias in Mudug so I don’t think him turning against PL was a surprise. I think that Deni and his group made a calculated risk that hostility from HSM would be more manageable than Farmajoo with his far superior PR game.

Not sure whether Deni will try running again to be honest. He might wait and see how the next 6 months or so pan out. I personally hope that he stays in Puntland.

The reality has shifted a lot in the last year, the political space has been abandoned by IC to the FGS which is trying to consolidate power and at this worst time ever SSC is siding with the FGS in the push to rewrite the rules game. FGS has also aligned with some countries who are going to directly support it's sovereignty push and while PL has UAE it is still isolated compared to FGS.

SSC elites are looking for the best deal and never once considered PL. Now they legitimize everything PL is fighting against. It's a tough sell, to say you will form one big state and complain about PL sabotage when your path to statehood involves betrayal of federal model and signing on to corrupt elections that will put HSM back into power. SSC is playing a double game that will come to light at the worst possible time but PL is alert to it.

Already the harsh exchange of words has begun and inevitably the conflict will follow. PL elites want to avoid anything too decisive and final and push the area back into disputed territority but that is just wishful thinking.
