As ATMIS has begun leaving Somalia, with increased Shabaab attacks into Kenya and Ethiopia, the importance of Somalia’s arms embargo being lifted has never been greater. Somalia has proven in Galmudug and Hirshabelle the SNA is strong enough to defeat Shabaab however lacks the equipment to be a defensive and stationary force therefore there’ll be a great risk to Shabaab overrunning bases and causing huge losses in equipment, allowing them to spread into neighbouring countries like Kenya, Ethiopia. Djibouti and Somaliland.
It is encouraging to see UAE support Somalia taking over its security and training 15,000 troops this year and 10,000 next year to take over from the 20,000 ATMIS troops set to leave. It’s also encouraging UAE as one of the countries to support extending the UN embargo at last year’s summit, along with the U.K., can see the significant progress made by Somalia on weapons recruitment, storage.
