I understand the vote is disruptive but crushing it with armed police is even worse. I don't see how they didn't see that. Besides, why try hard to keep a country together that wants to split up? If people like each other or want to b aligned for economic or security reasons, they'll do that. Just let catalonia go and same with Basque country.
I know. Let every state go and see how that goes. Trust me they will sort their problems out and pick themselves up. The rest of Europe wouldn't want this for obvious reasons. Belgium is split between the Walloons and Dutch and you saw how close the UK referendum was. No one wants their country split up and hence why they wouldn't allow it.Spain is going down the drain economically and that's why this has intensified. I agree, I think they should let them go but the rest of Spain will go into a recession worse than Greece if that happens.

What do you think is next for Catalonia? They voted 'yes' and although that has no legal standing in Spain or in the EU, they can act on it. You think they'll start issuing visas and controlling immigration? I think it'll be a catastrophic civil war like Syria. The Scottish referendum was a nail biter. I think it was swung by English people like JK Rowling living in Scotland though.
Yeah Spain won't do well without Catalonia![]()

The Spanish Police did not cover themselves in glory but the State had to act because the referendum violated the Spanish constitution. The nationalist parties in Catalonia were spoiling for a fight that would popularise their minority agenda. They achieved their aim.
All is not what it seems. Catalunya is not a country within a country. The Catalan language is also spoken in Valencia and the Balearic Islands but you do not see them trying to secede from Spain. Furthermore, ethnic Catalans are not an absolute majority in Catalunya. A lot of modern Catalans are descended from economic migrants from poorer regions in Spain such as Andalucia, Extremadura, Murcia etc. Hence, why Castilian is spoken as a mother tongue by a majority of people in Catalunya. Catalan nationalism, like many nationalist movements, has its roots among the educated classes. In contemporary times, Catalan nationalists have managed to brainwash some of the populace into believing that they are being 'oppressed' by the Spanish State.
Spain is paying the price for devolving too much power to the regions after the death of Franco. You do not see the Catalans in France causing havoc because the French State is not as tolerant as post-Franco Spain when it comes to ethnolinguistic diversity.
