This wasn't the first attempt on his life. There was high tensions after Parliament election in March. This pathed the way for Siad & Co to initiate the coup. The coup was still planned, onwards from the March election, but the assassination was a thread for him to take.

The election was highly contentious and saw the Somali Youth League gain an even greater majority in the parliament. Allegations of electoral fraud and corruption were rampant and more than 25 people were killed in election-related violence.

A general perception grew among Somalis that the SYL was becoming increasingly authoritarian in its rule. This view was compounded by the newly formed government under Prime Minister Egal largely ignoring allegations of fraud and corruption. This sweeping unrest and dissatisfaction created an unhealthy political situation in the country that paved the way for the October coup by Siad Barre and other officers.

Sharmake was killed by his tribesman. Reason being, I don't know. Has Siad & Co took their opportunity after the coup, yes. But the death of Sharmake AUN wasn't of his doing.

Exactly. It did not make sense for Barre to kill Sharmarke in cold blood on the other side of the country.

If Barre really wanted blood, he would have overthrown the government while Sharmarke was in Las Anod and Egal was in Washington. Then when both arrived in Xamar, he could have placed them on a show trial and executed them like other African military leaders have done.

The fact that Barre did not execute any SYL officials highlights restraint on Barre's part that we all know he did not have. Barre was always a trigger happy individual, why did he choose to not execute any former officials in a show trial?

This in my opinion even further proves the foreign involvement in the 1969 coup.
