We’re a very vulnerable diaspora, rightwing media is already on our ass as it is, going out of your way to broadcast your country experiencing something that goes on in just about every impoverished country without offering any nuance and context, is beyond reckless. Half of the countries we have similar rates as already passed legislation, they’re still dirt poor and because of lack of schooling/employment young girls still get married.

All of this talk of ‘rep’ is futile. Accept this and understand this, until Somalis get their act together and clean up their country and deal with the poverty and the corruption, we will always be looked down upon. No PR will save a society like ours until we become a wealthy one in which we as a gov and society can establish an image that works to our advantage. But when you have people living in camps, chaos, Karxiis, severe poverty, this is the end result. Even this Nigerian girl you’re complaining about is silly since Nigeria doesn’t have a good rep as well. Heck most of SSA doesn’t have a good rep and that’s due to rampant poverty and weak gov structures.

What is it exactly that you want everyday people in the west to do? Because there is no effective way for diasporas to help in this issue. Most are young, not wealthy and have very few skills.. they’re still building education or career skills.
Child marriage is deeply rooted in economic and institutional conditions, it requires top down solutions. Without stable, centralized institutions, even the most well-intentioned diaspora initiatives remain small-scale, there is not going to be a real impact at a population level
