Passport

Why is it written on the Somali passport "Somali Republic" and not the federal something? Like federal democratic republic of Somalia? The "Somali republic" is long gone. A federal republic system is in place and the naming should reflect that.

It is there for the same reason Arabic is written on the passport despite most Somalis unable read or speak Arabic.

It is outdated just as a lot of things in Somalia are.

Arab league members must have Arabic as an official language. Unless we leave the Arab league Arabic is here to stay. It's also a compulsory subject in schools. Why? The reasoning is to understand Islam better.

This are baseless claims, a language cannot be official if the local populace cannot speak it.

Arabic is not "compulsory" In Somali state schools. I went to one and I never learnt Arabic.

Futhermore keeping Arabic as an official language doesn't mean we magically understand the Deen better. Take a Quran to the streets of Somalia, and ask a random civilian the meaning of any ayah, I am willing to bet a lot of money that they don't know.

So this is with Arabic being an official language. If we remove it, nothing will change Deen wise.

Bro Arabic is a compulsory subject in Somalia even in hargeisa admin curriculum. It's included in the national exams. Maybe you studied in a school catered for diaspora that follows foreign curriculums like GCSE. Also even Arabs struggle with Quran and have to study it's tafsiir since Quran Arabic is ancient and very different from spoken everyday Arabic

Some schools I saw in garowe teach in Arabic only. I’m not saying a majority can speak it but definitely much more than we think do speak

Back when I was younger, we didn't study Arabic in the major school I went to. I studied Quran/Islamic studied at Malcaamad/Dugsi instead.

That explains it. I was talking about regular schools that teach the sciences like maths and whatnot. Dugsis are unofficial while schools must follow the national curriculum for their students to qualify for the national exams and be able to seek higher education

Even so that doesn't mean they can pick up a Quran and understand it. The Quran is written in classical Arabic even most Arabs themselves do not understand the Quran. They only speak and know modern Arabic.

I meant I went to a state school + a Dugsi they were completely separate. So again, I did not learn Arabic in school. Every school in Somalia those days had their own quirks and rules.

Maybe in 2024 things maybe "standardised" but definitely not at the time I was there.
