Over-familiarity with Somalis by non-Somalis

Turks, Indians, Pakistanis, and various Arab communities have been living in the West for over half a century, yet I don’t observe the same kind of overfamiliarity directed at them that I often notice with Somalis, who’ve only been in the West for about 30 years.

On social media, you will see non-Somalis casually using Somali words, sometimes even forming full sentences, under content specifically geared toward Somalis.

In real life, some feel comfortable shouting things like “warya,” “naya,” or “Abdi” at Somalis they’ve never met. That kind of unsolicited familiarity doesn’t seem to be directed at the other groups mentioned, despite their longer and more established presence. What explains this disproportionate overfamiliarity with Somalis in particular?

Thoughts?

Most of those groups don’t mix with other groups or post on social media for a wider audience as much. Habibi is quite popular tho and yalla, there is loads of Nigerian terms used by foreigners too.

My intention isn’t just to focus on their use of Somali words alone; those are only a few examples.

I’m more interested in their overall behavior, how some non-Somalis seem unusually comfortable around Somalis, crossing social boundaries or lines that wouldn’t typically be crossed with other communities. I’m trying to understand what might explain this pattern.

This seems to more common in the UK where ajanabis are extremely comfortable voicing their opinions and crossing boundaries it’s less pronounced in North America

There are far too many of those unserious types, especially on social media, who do nothing but laugh and scream "Wallahi" with zero sense of balance. You don't need to be some overly serious, stoic robot, but it wouldn’t hurt to add some goddamn balance to your personality.

Waxa adiga lagaa arko lagula dhaqma.

You can't afford to be too timid and unserious in this dog-eat-dog world.

I agree majority of the people who say naya or warya in public towards random somalis are boys with somali friends in the UK. It's actually gotten so annoying nearly all my somali female friends have gone through this they are way too comfortable with us

I knew it was common! I think it affects women more with strangers, but men are more likely to get it from their friends than women are.

We’re a mix of many different identities.

What I’ve noticed is that 95% of immigrant groups try very hard to stay lowkey. Both online and offline. From older immigrants like Jews, E.Europeans and Chinese, to post-1965 immigrants.
Especially our neighbors and other Africans.

Our pastoralists are literally the complete opposite.
