MOGADISHU (HOL) - Over 7 million Somalis as facing food shortages, the Somali government has said amid ongoing drought in several parts of the country.

A joint statement from the federal humanitarian affairs ministry and its equivalents in the Federal Member States noted Monday 7.7 million people were facing acute food shortages in the country.

The two levels of government noted that the effect of floods, droughts, COVID-19 and the recent conflict in Guriel, Galmudug state had exacerbated the situation.

At least 18,000 people were displaced in three days fighting in Guriel, the statement added. This is in addition to the 100,440 people displaced in the last two weeks in Guriel according to the UN.

The ministers from the two levels of government also warned that areas in Gedo, Bay, Hiiraan and Lower Shabelle were under siege by the militant group Al-Shabaab.

All we can do is pray and send whatever he have over there to the people. The government needs to implement food and water projects so that number of people starving goes down.
