Opinion: Through a vote, time to put the secessionist issues to rest

My timing might be in bad taste with Ethiopia openly infringing on “Somali sovereignty” but I think it’s something to consider.

If the people in northern Somalia genuinely want to leave Somalia, they should be allowed to do so. Not all the people that live in that region support the secession, so new borders, regions and names should be established. The Somali nationalist movement has proven to not be a good enough reason to bind the Somali people together as we can see all over Somalia. State -building is being unnecessarily slowed down across the region to deal with these same problems for decades now and we are well past the point of throwing claims of treason against each other.

Ideally, a referendum in Ethiopia would also be in the works. Somalia breaking apart while Ethiopia is intact is a recipe for disaster.
The Horn of Africa needs to move away from keeping their populations in countries against their will. Ethiopia has the blood of at-least a million of their own people on their hands. Time to move along and create something that works.

I’m willing to change my mind on this but other future options seem to be involving extended warfare which I do not support

You can not be mad if you let a tumor go untreated for decades and now find out you're dying.

What can I say. Any other nation worth anything would've put a end to it years ago.

You can not force people who want no part of you to stay. I say we take ssc and cut them a deal that they keep the rest. It'll save everyone headaches because ssc want no part of SL and SL want no part of the south.

After reading all those diaspora war-draft tweets, I’ve come to the conclusion I’m not about that dagaal way of life

:meleshame:
When Somalia gets back on its feets they'll quit their shit, don't worry. Most people in northern Somalia know we are one people, it's this loud mouth minority who are on a power trip that wants the seccesion, even if they get their secession they'll still come to attack other Somalis in the north, because they think they inherited the land from the British empire.. They're really screwed up in their heads.

If independence is something they are willing to organize and get behind in the north, why not? (Do I doubt its success? yes) It's time to put it behind us - the Somali government can focus on other things.
You are willing to trade an entire expansive country for a clan enclave, be our guest.

There are different political viewpoints in the region, they should figure it out among themselves through a vote.

You are right. The issue is with those British colonial borders which some folks believe to be ordained by God, they'll leave with less than they joined the union but I'm sure it is a price they are willing to pay.

Would you agree if other regions would want to secede as well? I may be wrong, but I can sense that others would want to follow suit (including those who are pro-Somalia). No one would decline the offer of being an independent country.

That is a possibility but within Somalias federal system, I don't think there is any other region that is so intent on leaving historically.
