After the 15th century the ajuurn fell behind the euros technologically and more importantly economically(they discovered the new world).

The Caliphate should have been separated from the Turkish state, but it shouldn't have been abolished. Imagine how much stupidity could have been averted if Islam had its own version of the Vatican able to give out fatwas that were taken seriously.

Btw it was only abolished because the Libyans and Egyptians rejected it when ataturk offered it to them, there wasn't a single figure everyone felt comfortable with so the title was dropped.
